I know it`s a novelty but yes I am posting on a Sunday morning but it`s a special Sunday being remembrance Sunday. I have never been in the forces but realise how lucky I am/we are and as the year rolls to an end I was thinking is there anything we can do for others. The thought came about as I spent a lovely Friday lunch in the company of 2 lovely people and I was relaying to them a story of someone who was recently doing some work at my house. The guy who was doing the work ( I think he called himself Georgie or Geordie or possibly Georgina, couldn`t quite grasp the name) was going to do some outside electrical work in the garden. Anyway this guy turned up and started work and during regular tea breaks intrigued me because no matter what the subject he seemed to be an oracle on everything and I was wondering why is he wiring up lighting when he could possibly have developed the cure for the common cold in between doing the crossword. After the day`s work when he had finished, you guessed it the electrics went bang, it seems the guy knew eveything about everything but electrics. My Dad is a retired and Qualified electrician but lives some distance from me and I didn`t want him working out in the cold but I explained what had happened and Dad knew what my mate Georgie,Geordie etc had done instantly and told me to tell him to well the 2nd word was off. Now to get back to a serious point I was thinking what can we do for somebody else at this time of year, maybe a bit of charity work or sponsor someone to do something, is there anyone in any of our areas that needs help. I do work with charities that are personal to me so won`t nominate any of them but we have so much of a spread of people on here that we could make it an annual thing with possibly Andy Davie choosing a charity. I could nominate my mate Georgina so we could sponsor him to become a qualified electrician, maybe he could do a sponsored parachute jump with a caveat that he knits his own parachute on the way down. Having been touched a little by illness earlier this year I am so aware of how fortunate we all are so ask the question, what can we do? Tony

Morning Tony

Remembrance Sunday is always a special day for me, as I spent 19 years in the Army and my brother-in-law was killed in Northern Ireland during the Warrenpoint massacre.

I freely give to the Royal British Legion, and was so pleased to learn that this year they have raised in excess of £27k from their Poppy Appeal. Seeing the remaining survivor of WW1 at the Albert Hall last night was very moving, and a timely reminder of the support we should continue to give to our troops overseas regardless of whether we believe in the reasons why they have been sent there. I was called up for service in the Gulf in 2003, and I can tell you that it is a very scary experience.

As a dog lover, I also give on a monthly to the RSPCA and the Dogs Trust - am afraid I am a real sucker for those sad letters they send out about animals being mistreated.

We are fortunate to be able to give a little of our earnings to charity, whereeas a lot of our forum members are struggling on enforced breadlines by creditors who failed to see that an affordable repayment was being made - and then wanted more. But your idea of having a sponsored charity is a good one - and I would certainly be happy to support this.

What an awful tale about your electrical work. George sounds just like someone I know quite well who is a font of information, most of which is rarely correct. People like this can be dangerous when you are looking for an appropriate solution to a problem - so I would stick to someone who is qualified to do your wiring next time!

I always support breast cancer having lost my mum to it and watching my sister inlaw fight this awfull disease whilst pregnant.
To be honesyt being in the nurseing profeession i watch cancer destroy so many familys, and the macmillan nurses truly do deserve a medal for there care and support,so regardless to how low i am on income i always make sure i have enough money to pay my monthly payments to the garden house hospice.
I asked my grandson today why we buy poppies and he said bless him to help all those brave men that died fighting the war.I thought well at least they are being educated about things that are important.
I f there is anything i can do to support any charities that help those less fortunate than ourselfes then im in.

I could not agree more with regard to Macmillan nurses we recently watched my mum in law succumb to cancer and these people are worth their weight in gold the way they work and conduct themselves a credit to mankind. Tony

we all wear our poppys with pride...my middle daughter (aged 8) informed me this morning to remember the 2 mins silence at 11am....i was so proud that she saw the importance in this. Rob served in the Army for 6 years ... Northern Ireland and Gulf.

I also donate monthly to NSPCC, coming from a not so great childhood myself i think those kids need all the help, care and love they can get.

Hi
Great post Tony and yes your right it would be good to do something for charity.
Funny because I was thinking today how nice it would for forum members to get together next summer for a BBQ,maybe we could combine this with a charity event.
Any thoughts ?

Nice to see you posting again Tony, hope your well.

Having served in the army myself and with my eldest daughters fiancée currently in the gulf, remembrance Sunday is very important to my family.

Andy I think the summer BBQ is a great idea – If Leybridge can help at all – perhaps with some sponsorship, please let me know.

My practice will also be happy to contribute towards a summer event as well - and also to make a donation towards a charity supported by forum members as part of our Christmas marketing budget.

Andy

It goes without saying that if we can be of help then let us know. I watched a programme presented by Jeremy Paxman about Wilfred Owen yesterday and realised how ignorant I was to the way others had to battle on and what they had to live through to enable us to have the opportunities we have.Any help you need let me know and if I can do it I will. I watched the Remembrance Service on Sunday, and like I do every year I cried. I've watched it each year since I was little and it always upsets me. If I see the old soldiers selling poppies I have to buy one, no matter how many I've already bought!

There are a few other charities that I support:

The Multiple Sclerosis Society - my Dad suffered from MS for 20 years and the sooner they find a cure for this terrible disease the better.

Cancer Research UK - so many members of my family (including my dad) have died from cancer. I do the Race for Life each year and although I don't raise a great deal I feel as if I'm doing something.

MacMillan Nurses - my uncle was cared for in MacMillan Hospice for the last weeks of his life and the care he received was amazing.

Each month at work we all give £2 to go into the charity pot and it's my job to distribute it - last month's went to the Royal British Legion and the Breast Cancer Campaign but I am always trying to think of other charities to give the money to, so if anyone has any ideas let me know.

A summer BBQ / charity event would be a great idea and having met a few of the other forum members last night it would be nice to meet a few more!

Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is the present - a gift to make the most of.
