It is so sad and maybe when we moan about our jobs, we should give a thought to others.

The steel industry is pivotal to our area and this week saw the inquest of a worker who "accidenatally fell to his death into a channel of 1,400C molten metal."

The gentleman put his own life at risk to rescue colleagues.......my moans about a day in the life of HR seem trivial!!

Quite agree Julie - puts everything into perspective.

I can't imagine the death of that worker - I hope he didn't suffer.

I have to say I rarely agree with H&S as half of the rules are a complete waste of time. I remember reading about PCSOs watching a child drown as they weren't allowed in the water, and about a man was injured and drowned in a shallow ditch because the emergency services weren't allowed to go in to rescue him.

There is a place for H&S but not at the expense of common sense.

I remember reading those stories Skip and you wonder where your human natural reaction would kick in?

I have qualifications in H&S ( IOSH & NEBOSH), but nothing would stop me from trying to save someone.

Exactly. I can't swim so there would be no point in me jumping in to try and save someone, but I would have to do something even if it was only trying to throw a rope to the person in trouble.

Being a steelworker, the safety standards these days are very high, but unfortunately we still have accidents, being a high risk environment,I live in a past mining area that has a 150 year history. My thoughts and workmates have been with the welsh miners and there families today.

Mining and steelwork was and is such a huge part of employment, you just forget how dangerous it can be,

Some miners escaped unhurt, one is still in hospital...thoughts and prayers are with them too.

A miner stood at the golden gate, his head was bent and low. He meekly asked the man of fate the way that he should go. "what have you done" St Peter said "to gain admission here" "I merely mined for coal" he said "for many and many a year" St Peter opened wide the gate and softly tolled the bell "come in and choose your harp" he said.... "you've had your share of hell"...

Very good and very apt Julie. My family have been miners for generations, starting with tin and then coal in South Wales and also Yorkshire. My grandfather lived until his early 90's and died in his sleep -- yet the cause of death was still attributed to his years in the mines. He was proud of his "tattoed scars", where the coal dust had got into wounds.
My opinions are merely that .. opinions based on experience. Always seek professional advice.

An absolute tragedy and helps us to put things in perspective. I was horrified to read in the metro about the facebook page - there is an official investigation into this now and I sincerely hope justice is served.

A complete disgrace... I do feel the world is slowly going mad but humanity should NEVER be disrespected.

My love, warmth and empathy to the famiies. We should count our blessings every morning when we open our eyes to face the day.
