At the opposite end of the scale, a friend of mine at work got married and his wife's wedding dress cost £2,800! When she phoned him and told him how much it was I saw the colour drain from his face and his jaw hit the floor!

Saw my Mum today to tell her about it and she thought it was a great idea. She also told me it'd be nice at the Holiday Inn as apparantly my Grandad helped build it!!

I never met him as he died before I was born, and we've just recently lost my Mum's Mum now too, so I don't have any grandparents left.

If I was to ever marry again, it would be abroad. We are trying to convince my daughter that she should do this, rather than do it in this country.

I remember my first wedding. It was the beginning of October, I had a very long veil, it was extremely windy and I thought I was going to take off!

I must have gone through a million different ideas for what we could do, and had pretty much settled on going abroad (partly due to family politics!) we were going to go to Australia but it was working out way tooooo expensive. So we're going to save that for an anniversary later on (or renew our vows?) and do this for the moment.

I did look at other wedding options abroad, but couldn't really settle on anything.

I'd just like to get married now, not have to save for years first.....not getting any younger! lol [;)]

When I get all the details for the Holiday Inn budget wedding, i'll post it just in case anyone else is interested. As far as I can remember its pretty amazing.

A wedding abroad is great if you can a) afford it! or b)are planning a bit of a 'do' and it is cheaper than a big wedding at home.

I am trying to persuade the daughter (when she gets married) to go abroad, but her boyfriend is Catholic and I don't think his parents would forgive him if he didn't have a church ceremony in this country.

I just hope they wait until the end of the IVA, otherwise they'll b paying for the whole lot themselves!

If I can persuade Dave to marry me we're definitely going abroad as it will avoid so much in the way of family politics as there are certain people we wouldn't want to invite, and I know this sounds awful, but I wouldn't have to invite all the people we know with children - there's too many of them, and it'll cost the earth!

At the moment it's between Las Vegas and Florida, but as he still hasn't agreed to the actual marriage yet I won't hold my breath!

Good luck with the wedding plans Kitkat xxx

I thought of Vegas too at one point, i've been there before and would love to go back. I quite faniced the idea of being near a beach though, and didn't want to travel round too much....you know just flop somewhere, get married and flop about some more....sounds lazy huh? [:D]

So really we're now looking at the super cheap deal at Holiday Inn and then a nice honeymoon [:)] I hope!!!!

Ok, as promised some details for those of you that might be interested...

Went to see my local Holiday Inn today and its fantastic, amazing views from the 'Penthouse' floor where ceremony/wedding breakfast etc would be. (was a bit surreal as there was a bride there waiting to go off to her wedding! I managed to get a business card from her driver [:)])I believe each different Holiday Inn has a different set of packages, but this is what mine's offering...

All packages include red carpet on arrival, informal host, civil ceremony, room hire, DJ until 1am, private bar until 1am.

Package 1
Evening buffet for 70

Package 2
3 Course wedding breakfast for 40 people

Package 3
Drinks reception for 50
evening buffet for 50
Overnight accomodation for Bride and Groom

Package 4
Reception buffet for 30
evening buffet for 50
Accomodation for Bride and Groom

Hmmmm, decisions decisions! [:D]

Personally, I would go for option 1 - as during the day you could have your ceremony with close friends and family - and perhaps have a nice lunch somewhere - and then a big party in the night for all your friends. Or why not get married at say 5pm and then you could ask guests to turn up in evening dress and just go straight into the party and buffet.

I hated the day bit of my wedding - fussy photographers, having to yack to long distant relatives that I had not seen for years - when all I wanted to do was get to the bar !

You could ask for the overnight accomodation as a wedding present - or ask for vouchers towards it.

As for wedding cake - why not ask your local catering college to see if they would like to do it as a project - you could then go for something really unusual, and probably only have to pay for the ingredients.

My first wedding was the full monty - top hat and tails the lot. Must have cost my parents a fortune and three years later we had split up!

The second was very low key registry office, just close family and friends, a meal with brothers-in-law and partners that night and then we threw a party the following night which finished at about 6 the next morning. We had a wonderful time.

If it had been the thing at the time, we would have gone abroad.

for evenng buffets we were told to cater for 20% less than the actual numbers attending.

I have also been to a wedding where they didnt want presents but we paid for our own day meal and drinks nobody had an issue with that!x
