We long to be debt free....

Both myself and my partner are looking at IVA's as a solution to our debt problems. We have been paying creditors consistently but over the past 18 months we have had to "rob peter to pay paul". We jointly own our house, have a together mortgage with Northern Rock, with a sizable debt, this couple with the credit cards and loans mean we probably owe around £30k each. It's ridiculous. We have run these debts up buying/furnishing our house. Idiotic really. We had a little money in our house for a secured loan, but it was a small amount to pay off some other debts. I wish we had not done that now, but we did it blindly thinking it was for the best. We should have consulted a professional. It's a subject, that like many, I struggle to bring into the open.
We were due to be married in August but will struggle to continue to pay for the wedding etc (unless we max our cards). Our jobs mean, bankruptcy = redundancy. It's difficult to see a way out of our situation. We are unsure of how the process actually works (despite disseminating the information held on here). We also pay student loans out of our wage packets. Are they included in an IVA etc.... if so I dread to think of the debts.
We long to be debt free....

Hello Richard and welcome to the forum. I think most of us have been where you are now. There are an awful lot of things I wouldn't do now if I had my time over again. It is a very stressful time, and all of us on here can sympathise.

Just so you dont feel alone, me and my partner also had a Together mortgage with NR and like you we borrowed secured loans etc with them to 'Do up the house ' etc , we have also been robbing paul to pay peter and it feels so horrible.

Well Done for admittting you have debt and need help to sort out your finances .

We are getting married in Septemeber this year and finding all the stress is ruining the fun of the wedding. Hopefully some experts will be along shortly to help you out and offer some good advice. You will def find it worthwhile being a member here!

I think you get used to putting that Animaleyes to welcome new people and tell them that someone will help them out. I know I have found this forum to be a godsend, trouble is, it's addictive and I sometimes don't know when to stop!

I know just how you feel. Your circumstances are similar to ours as we have a NR together mortgage. We have just started out on our IVA journey... and the relief so far in admitting our debt problems has been worth it! Good luck

we are same as you an just facing up to it. already made the phonecall and feeling tons better. you have some great friends on here too. nobody judgemental, just helpful and there when you need them.

hi - just wanted to say weloome and well done for facing up to your debt problems!

we were like you robbing peter to pay paul and for months felt too ashamed to ask for help but making that initial phone call was the best thing we have ever done, our iva was approved on monday and the relief is immense!

our ip is melanie who is an expert on here, she and her firm have been brilliant!

there is solution for you so dont struggle on any more

You really need to speak to a professional as soon as you can. Whilst picking up the phone may be very daunting for you, most people I know that work in this field will treat you with nothing but the utmost courtesy and respect. You will feel much better at the end of the call I am sure.

I would encourage you to speak to 2 or 3 different people to get a balanced view, you can read independent reviews on www.iva.com

Your story sounds so familiar - we too have a NR mortgage and loan - they are our main creditor and voted yes in our IVA...we started ours at the end of March.
