Hi

I was shot down in pain on Sunday, I was terrified, I couldnt hardly move with it. It lasted around 10 mins and then went away, then on Sunday night, it happened again----three times. My stepdaughter and daughter went on the internet, while the others looked on terrified. I went to the GP receptionist yesterday and filled out a form and dutifully supplied a sample in one of their lovely containers. They phoned back and said it contained blood and infection. I honestly thought the back pain I had been suffering from was due to travelling, standing around a lot and the busy schedule, driving, high heels, etc I have been up to recently.

It seems it was a kidney stone, although its not been confirmed. Can you get a kidney stone out of the blue like that? Is it likely to come back? I have never had this happen before.... Gall stones yes, I had them but that blighter is long gone. I have to go and fetch a prescription from the Docs for AB's. I am scared as I have long driving on the motorway ahead of me, I know I couldnt drive with that degree of pain.... Does anyone know about these things???

Hi Lily,

Hope you're not in too much pain. My dad had kidney stones and apparently it can be caused by dehydration. You should drink at least 12 full glasses of water a day and the stones should pass.

Hope this helps x

Hi Lili

Here are two sites which may be of help. I got rid of my Kddley Stones by drinking 8 pints of water a day for 3 weeks ... but different strokes for different folks:-

* National Kidney Federation (UK)
0845 6010209
www.kidney.org.uk
* Kidney Research UK
0845 0707601
www.kidneyresearchuk.org
When I was young I was called a rugged individualist
When I was in my fifties I was considered eccentric
Here I am doing and saying the same things I did back then and now I'm labelled senile

Thanks guys

I havent had the excruciating pain that I had on Sunday since, its just back pain and chills now. What I was passing was like brown liquid, I havent seen anything. According to NHS direct the stone was stuck, causing the pain and has now ended up being passed or is in the bladder, I was advised to go to the GP but getting an appointment..... almost impossible. The rest is secondary infection which is what the script is for. I could honestly cry, I am fed up. Everyone went home last night, they had been staying for the party. The house is a tip and I've so much washing and ironing, the kids have nothing to wear.

If that was the end of it, I will cope. The Doctor did phone last night and said to come down for the script but I couldnt get there in time, he also said drink plenty of water, which I have. He was a bit annoyed that I couldnt go straight down but I moved house and didnt move GP's so its a 15 min drive. Thanks for the info Ray, I will take a look, it just came out of the blue and I wondered how? I had been feeling very well until Saturday night. I thought you were either predisposed to getting stones or not and you had them or not, I never have. It also said somewhere they are quite rare in females...

Hi Lily

Yes kidney stones can just come out of the blue! I have had three so far and whilst you are passing them the pain is excruciating as you say but once they have gone they have gone and you just get a soreness from them actually passing through! I thought the pain was worse then gallstones and labour! My GP says make sure you drink plenty and have cranberry juice (Yuk!) The three have been over a period of 8 years or so - After the third one I was sent for a MRI and was told that there was a small stone developing but as of yet it hasn't passed!! (Fingers crossed)
So hopefully yours is passed and you should be OK. Thoughts are with you.

Hey rainbow.

Thanks so much. That sounds like the kind of stones I can cope with, 3 in eight years... Thats great news. I have to take AB's for infection, thats probably where the back pain (its cope able) and chills are coming from. I had gall stones and had the gall bladder removed. Yeah, that excruciating pain, stops you in youre tracks, I couldnt even frown, "eeeeeee, pain" was all I managed to utter. Worse than anything so far, labour, gall stones, shutting my own finger in the electric windows (did that to my son last night). Thank you, thank you, thank you, you have really cheered me up.

Your welcome Lily and glad to be of assistance! ~The first one frightened the life out of me I can tell you I was at work in an empty house on my own and couldn't even walk to the car let alone drive it! Felt so silly ringing the office and asking someone to come out and get me and take me to the GP's but by the time that had all happened I had passed it! Second time hubby rushed to the hospital and they asked me for a sample in one of those paper dishes which was full of blood and yes you've guessed it I passed it again! but at least they could tell me it was a kidney stone that time, by the time the third one came I thought I know what this is give me lots to drink and just stayed at home in bed and the loo and passed it all by myself! Gall bladder removal I had to have the barn door!! and had 17 stones.. ouch trapping your finger in the electric window, hope you get the stones at the same frequency as me or even less - I always think once you know what it is its no so bad!!

I know, I didnt know what the hell it was, my kids thought I was dying from a heart attack or something as I went so sick with the pain. Everyone was panicking, I couldnt help them. I feel so much better now, thanks to you. Really cheered me up. I know it could happen again, but at least I will know why. I will be glad when the back pain and chills are over though. I dont think I will bother going to the GP now, just take the antibiotics and see what happens. Thanks so much, you've put the smile right back on my face.

Thanks Ang, its not too bad now, I am gong to take something for the back pain now, managed to get a little bit of ironing and washing done, Tidied and vaccumed the house. I have rushed in and out between the showers, been pounding down every so often, wouldnt believe its August, tumble dryer in full swing. Drinking is Ok but peeing is a not so much fun right now. I have an evening of no visitors, TV and a long sit down, cant wait. Its been ages since I had that.

I`ve had Kidney stones 3 times,I keep getting it because I have to take Diamox for my IIH condition.
The last time I had to have an operation because the stone was so large it wouldn`t pass on it`s own.
I`m that fed up with all the side effects off Diamox(kidney stones being a major one) that I`m having a shunt put in my head in September and then hopefully I can get back to normal.

Hi Lili,
I haven't read all the posts on here yet - but wanted to reply as fast as I could.
Kidney stones just happen - its a build of of calcium and other minerals in the kidneys and like Gall stones the little blighters form. They range in size from gravel ike material to large stones. The ureter drains the urine from the kidney to the bladder, is a small narrow structure hence the stones get trapped and you suffer dreadful pain. The stones will either lodge somewhere they can't pass or flow into the bladder and hopefully out in the urine.
You need to get the script - the fever and chills you are experiencing show the infection in you water works - that will not go away on it's own and you condition may deteoriate (Sorry I can't be more positive)
You need medication and an IVP (Intra venous pyelorogram - a special x-ray of your kidneys, pain releif, rest and anti-biotics).
As getting to your dcotor is hard - my advice would be to phine 999 should the pain return - those of us who work in healthcare know this will get you sorted in double quick time!!
If you want to chat more about this ask admin for my e-mail or phone number, I'm always here if you need me.
Hope the stone passes without too much trouble - but be warned there may be more to come.
Lots of hugs,
Chardonnay

Hi Again Lili,
I forgot to say don't worry that you'll need surgery or anything that severe in the future - kidney stones can be treated with Lithotripsy - they are soud waves passed to your kidneys from an extrenal machine - the waves break down the stones so you can pass them easily by natures route!!
Keep well and rest - leave the hoovering, etc for a couple of days and let your body heal,Hugs,
Chardonnay
