Ray, son works for EDF and has said many a time that once pre-payment meters are in they very rarely get took out and replaced with 'normal' meters. 2 reasons for this, #1.the pre-paid tarrif is higher and #2.they know the usage is paid for.
Years ago this happened to me, the property I was living in had prepay meters and when we moved I got a bill from B'Gas stating I owed them £100+. I phoned them and asked how I could possibly owe them as I had a pre-pay meter?? I actually left around £15 credit on the meter!!! Anyhow, never heard anymore from them.
Npower are a nightmare though....the d/d were too low for our usage at the old address for nearly 2 year.....their excuse was that they needed at least 12mths to correctly set the payments and they only do this once a year at a set time. I had missed that date the 1st year so it rolled onto the 2nd, I owed them £1,500!!!!! When I complained that it had been allowed to get that high, I was informed that it was the customer's responsibility to monitor the usage and bills and contact them if the payments weren't covering the usage!!! Needless to say I couldn't contain my laughter.....and annoyance!!
It's about time these companies were brought to task about the way they treat their customers AND the prices they charge!
It's nice to be back......

As a follow on to this saga. I spoke to Watchdog last week about this bill and they were very interested. Remarkably NPower called me today and apologized for the mess and informed me I'd been actually paying over the odds and I don't owe them any monies. I've also had my rate slightly reduced saving me approx £5.00 per week. What is remarkable is that I was told on the 17th July that it would take British Gas and NPower around 5-8 weeks to sort this problem out. Yet within 2 days of ringing BBC the problem was solved. God Bless Aunty Beeb

Comtact them asking for a complete breakdown of the bill INCLUDING the exact dates the arrears where accumulated.

If you feel these are wrong then contact their customer service department with a view to complaining.

Go through their full complaints procedure and if you still feel they are in the wrong contact the power ombudsman.

It's worth a try!

Good luck

Great news for you Ray.

I would still push for a written apology and something on the side for all the worry and hard work you've been put through sorting out their problem!

You go get em!
