Hi debbie and good luck.

I want to change career, I have realised that there are more important things than just working to survive, just getting through a stressful day/week/month, without even considering there is anything else in life. I want to do something related to counselling, I have done courses, used to be a samaritan, (which is where I did my research). I want to appreciate what I have instead of what I dont have and to be able to believe I can cope with my lot, its never going to be beyond me.

Anyway, I am so pleased that you can now look ahead, we both can. I am also glad that I came here because I have learned so much....

Good luck on your journey.

Hi Lili

Your local college should do an 'introduction to counselling skills' course. This is what I took first of all, then went on to do a two year counselling course and practised counselling privately, which is probably the best way to do it as counselling posts tend to be pretty few and far between ... but there is lots of scope for private practice.

I have actually applied to tutor on a new OU course on counselling skills which is starting up later this year. Haven't heard anything yet.

I always say that counsellors and born and not made ... you can learn counselling skills, but you can't learn how to counsel people, that is a gift ... which YOU well and truly have as evidenced from your posts here on the Forum.

I am VERY lucky ... I have made to position my life whereby I don't go to work ... I just have work to do each day [:)]

When I was young I was called a rugged individualist
When I was in my fifties I was considered eccentric
Here I am doing and saying the same things I did back then and now I'm labelled senile

Good luck from me too Lesley + Debbie. Learning and achieving definitely gives you a feeling of self worth.

I'm doing my A1 training at the moment and just about to sign up on CIPD Employment Law - I'll be the best qualified office manager in Wales at this rate lol.

Keep going everyone [;)]

Hey Julie, I don't know if you can answer this but how long is "reasonable" time to notify staff of a transfer of business. I've asked ACAS but they just say "reasonable", are there any laws? I want to do everything right? Sorry to ask but I just read the employment law thing and thought you might know![:I] Good luck with that by the way. Viki X

Hi Vicki - there are no set limits unfortunately. You just have to make sure you've given the staff time to raise any issues. I'm guessing you're asking due to the sale of your restaurant? You will be entering what is called TUPE - I'm in the process of that with the company I work for at the moment. In case you're not aware - there does need to be an employee representative elected, acts as a go between. ACAS are great but other websites for advice are,direct.gov , dti.gov, businesslink.gov.uk.

Sorry thats not much help.

No that's lots of help, thank you. Nothing will change for the staff, I just won't be their boss anymore! There are only six of them. I will go to those web sites and have a little look. Thanks again. Viki X

It will be straight forward for you - the company I'm working for is changing owners and I'm the employees representative so if I can help please ask.

You just basically need to make sure the new boss has copies of their job descriptions, rate of pay etc.

Ah thanks Julie, I may pick your brains in the next few weeks. All this selling stuff is not as straight forward as I thought! X
