Right everyone, I need your support (don't worry, not financial!) - I've decided to take part in one of the Cancer Research 10k runs later this year. The only problem is I haven't run properly since I was made to do the cross country at school so it's going to be hard going!

I've printed off the beginner's training plan from the Cancer Research website and training starts tonight - according to the plan a 20 minute power walk.

The post from Sue about her parents motivated me to get off my backside and do something, and also the fact that so many of my family have had cancer. Please try and motivate me - I hate exercise so it's not going to be easy!

Go for it Skippy. If I lived nearer I would come and train you. i would need a motability scooter to keep up though. Seriously well done I am sure you will do it. I dont like particulary going fo my walks but I just try to make a reason for it. Like needing a pint of milk and walking instead of getting in the car. Try to fit it in with normal living or just say right wheni get home i am going straight out and get it done. Not so bad when you actually get out the front door. You have the nicer weather now as well. I am waffling but go you girl well done.

Ang xx

Now there's an idea - I could cadge a lift on the back of the scooter! I'll have to mention it to Dave!

I'm lucky that I live near the river, so I can run along the tow path - I've bought myself an iPod off Ebay as well so I can have some music to keep me going!

That reminds me of when I was a teenager and had a few to many ciders on a pub crawl and nearly ended up in the river as I wanted to catch a swan...

Hey skippy, that's brilliant and a great cause. After my Mum died I got all my friends to run with me for the 10k in Liverpool. I ran for Marie Curie as they looked after my Mum and I wanted to give a little back. I had never ran before and so just ran round the park two times a week for two months. It was enough for me as on the day you somehow keep going! It's an amazing feeling. Lots walk a little, run a little etc. Unfortunately I shouldn't have ran as I later found out I've got a knee problem and now can never run again, but if I had to, I'd do it all over again. When everyone is cheering and you know you are making a difference, well, it's a special feeling. I'll support you on the forum all the way. Ipod does help. Well done. Viki X

Good luck Melanie! The race that I'm hoping to do it on 28th September, running around the grounds of Hampton Court Palace. I've walked the Race for Life for the last 3 years but I can't do it this year so I thought I'd set my sights a bit higher - it should help me lose weight as well! Dave's going to do it as well - he used to run half marathons but hasn't done one in all the years I've known him so it's like we're both starting from scratch.

Well done Viki, it must be an amazing feeling to finish and say that you've done it!

That's fantastic Skippy.

You'll find the whole event extremly motivating. I ran the London Marathon for the first time last year and it was such a positive experience.

Keep focusing on the cause. I ran for Scope and everytime I wanted to give up during the Marathon or couldn't be bothered to go and train anymore I focused on the charity and it got me through it!

Set yourself realistic goals, and don't over do it. Some excercise 2-3 times a week will be plenty.

All the best with everything.
Best Regards
Oliver

Lesley (used to be isthereanend) and I are doing the 5k Race for Life this Sunday!!

We signed up for it nearly 2 months ago with a view to running it. I was recently told on doctors orders that I cannot run it at the moment so Lesley and I have made a pact that we are still going to do it but we will walk it! (hopefully we wont be the only ones!). Any excuse for Lesley though not to run ;)!! Hopefully it will be dry and cool!

Thanks Skippy! This is the first one we have done! Its at Stamford and at this venue there is the option of the extended 10k race which we did initially think we would do. Who are we trying to kid??!! [:D] Lesley's daughter who is 14 is also doing it with us although I have a feeling we will get left behind!!

Good luck for yours in September! I already have a guaranteed place for the London Marathon next year so hopefully I will get the green light from the Docs soon and I can start training for that! Must be mad!

Good luck with the training for the marathon - are you running for charity?

Dave and I both registered to do the 10k a couple of years ago but it was a disaster - he fell over and twisted his ankle and I hurt my back and could hardly walk, let alone run! Fingers crossed this year will be better and we'll actually make it to the start line!
