we have completed 5 years IVA and are 3 months into our extra year
we took daughter to the bank at the weekend to open her an account she is 14, all went well and she parted with her £20, she signed up for on line banking etc. The girl then asked if we did online banking, we said no, so she said she'd set it. Then she got a puzzled look, maybe we should have left then, then she blurted out "can i ask have you ever been made bankrupt", wife replied no, i started moving daughter away rapidly. Anyhow we didn't get online banking, and my wife explained to her we weren't bankrupt, but in an IVA, and we opened the account after it started to pay our direct debits etc, we have no overdraft facility, and deposit in excess of £3k a month. The girl sort of apologised for her statement and we left.

That is bad. Must admit that we have had no problem with setting up online banking and daughter has been able to open several bank accounts.

They shouldn't have mentioned that to you with your daughter there anyway.

It was Halifax, my wife used to work in banking and i think the assistant was left knowing she had chosen the wrong response to what she said!!
thankfully no questions from daughter.

That is awful for you and so glad daughter has asked no questions. Good that your wife used to work in banking and knew how to respond. Some people really should have extra training.

I think some people tend to share their IVA/Bankruptcy with others as in family/friends and others like myself keep it to myself, my forum friends and my hubby was the only one until recently who knew about mine and I am two years in now.

Recently I did confide in a friend but doubt I'll tell anyone else, my daughter knows someone is managing our money for a few years as we got in a bit of a mess but I personally don't feel at 16 she needs to know the ins and outs.

I guess we're all different.

A lot of people prefer to keep their IVA private, which I completely understand. Although I've been fairly open about my IVA and BR there are some people who I wouldn't dream of telling.

the only people who kmow are those who need to from fianacial companies family wise its just me and wife that know, it will be over in 9 months and daughter will never know
we have saved hard so she has done all school trips london, skiing etc, she does not need to know

Its very much a personal decision isn't it?

My daughters knew about it, probably because they were older. I think if they were still of school age I wouldn't have told them as I wouldn't have wanted them to worry.

I certainly would have been annoyed if someone else had let the cat out of the bag.

Again Horrendous! But I think you handled it well.

We personally have not told family & it took a while to tell very very close friends & only a select few. Family - no reason, they can not help n would only begin to ask as to why, mainly my parents as they are in their 70s n do not want to bother them. We become less bothered the longer the IVA runs & you start to adjust to IVA life n others get used to your new way of life too.

Why did she feel she had to mention that anyway when you were only asking for online banking. Some people have no integrity!

daughter received post yesterday, instructions how to log on to her online account
she tried last night but there was no account active, we phoned the help desk and he could not trace an account, surely they can't stop a 13 year old having an account because of our situation? i will be visiting the bank lunch time to sort out, hope its just an error!!!!!
