I seem to remember someone saying that Co-op will let one have a Basic Bank Account, even if they are one of your creditors - does anyone know if this is the case???

Hi Snowman

I initially panicked hen I went to get an account with the Co Op as they referred the application I was convinced they were not going to give me an account - not sure what woul have happened if they were a creditor. Anyway about 2 wks later account opened and bobs your uncle.

BUT in the mean time I actually walked into an Abbey branch and opened an account with them. I took 3 bills, passport, driving licence, birth certificate etc. They gave me an account number the same day!

Good luck. XX

I had a very good experience with natwest. I needed to change my bank account from first direct and I just went into the local branch (i'm lucky enough to be able to walk in at lunchtime). Said I wanted a basic bank account, nothing fancy, no chequebook, just wanted to to keep it simple. they couldn't have been more helpful. I already knew that I wanted the step account. The whole thing took about 15mins. My card was through within a week. i have since opened an e-savings account with them online - which was really easy as I had already registered for online banking, and I have set up a standing order to put my contingency amount into it each month. That may be being a bit premature as I haven't had my IVA agreed yet but it is nice to know it is already set up ready to use.
So at the moment no complaints from me about NatWest!!
Full and Final agreed 28th October 2010.

C0-op Bank definetley will set you up with a basic bank account (cashminder)You apply over the phone and its all done there and then. No credit checks as far as I know (well mine wouldnt have gone through if this was the case)and i seem to remember the guy on the phone telling me that nobody is refused a cashminder account - even bankrupt people are allowed them!!

Hi Guys

Thanks for all the replies and info.

Since then, I have now had a letter from Natwest saying I now have a Basic Bank Account, and should get my card in the next few days!!! Bizarre - this is after the woman in the Branch said they would not take me!!! They gave me an Acc. No. and SC so it must be true!!!

Since then, I have also applied to RBS for a Basic Account - I did it online and am waiting to hear back.

Would like to go with Coop but they are one of my creditors so not sure if they would have me???
