We have just made our first payment into our Iva, we have been budgeting well, even managing to celebrate our daughter’s 21st without going crazy. On Friday my old reliable Ford Focus decided to give up the ghost. It will only go into second gear :-(. We are taking it to the garage Monday but our mechanic says it “sounds terminal “. We live in the middle of nowhere with no bus service. I have no transport to get to work so am currently begging and hinting for lifts for the next week. Even then I have a four mile journey to the nearest pick up point. (I am disabled so can’t walk or cycle it!). I can only hope it is somehow repairable within our measly amount of savings put by whilst setting up Iva for emergencies.

Normally the repair would go on a credit card or another loan would be taken out to replace it . It has hit me hard the reality of this situation. I feel really quite sick

Really bad timing -- you could ask for a payment break, but this early on it's a long shot. Any break will be added back on at the end.

Some of these "sounding terminal" faults are actually low fluid levels or a worn selector, so let's hope it is less terminal than it sounds.
My opinions are merely that .. opinions based on experience. Always seek professional advice.

Fingers crossed the mechanic can save the day !

You mention you are disabled - without prying have you looking into eligibility for a motability car ?

I agree with Luluj - look into a motability car.
