Have finally got around to opening a new bank account now all I need to do is swop the DDs and then decide on a company and keep fingers crossed that something will be able to be sorted.

Can someone tell me if there is any truth to what a debt collection co told me - that going through Step Change Charity will be cheaper than going through companies such as Vincent Bond etc. Thereby leaving more money to pay my creditors. Is this correct?
Thanking you all in advance for our hepl
Susan

Hi. No, what you were told is not true. For an IVA Stepchange charge in exactly the same way as any other company. They also refer on many of their "applicants" to a private company anyway.

StepChange is largely funded by the creditors -- so the creditors would rather you went to StepChange.

I think you get a better service with the private companies because they are not doing it for free. The charities have soooo many to deal with you just become a number.

Talk to several companies before you make a choice. Reading through posts on this forum will give you a good idea of those companies with good reputations. But you need to be comfortable with your choice as it is a long (and sometimes hard)journey.
Life after IVA is wonderful.

I agree with the other posters have a good read on here, I spoke to step change & national debt line I then found this forum and went with a smaller company which I am so glad about as the service I have had has been fantastic when I need to query anything they always email back the same day can not fault them I am so glad I made the choice I did as I would have just felt like a number wuth the debt charities. Good Luck Susan with whatever you decide keep using the forum for support I do not know what I would have done without it leading up to our IVA's being approved. Louise

Josu -- the "charities" do not do IVA's for free -- this is a common misconception -- they charge in the same way as private firms do, but also get "donations" from the creditors.

Hi and welcome to the world of becoming debt free:). I echo what has been said above. Make sure you speak to one or 2 companies and go with who you feel most comfortable with. We didn't as we panicked, although I cant fault the company that we're with really I do feel there are better and more personal ones around. goodluck

They receive commission from the banks for collecting the money in their DMPs just as debt collectors do.

Nothing is free, Josu :-) But, yes, they are very busy as they do get a lot of referrals from creditors and advice agencies.
