I have been in and out of secure psychriatric units a number of times over the lasy year after suffering mental breakdowns, attempting suicide etc. As it now stands I have applied for disability living allowance and my wife is my carer for which she has so far received a sum of £213 from our social services for needs to make her life easier i.e. new vacuum, pampering herself ie hair done health farm. I do not know if I have been granted disability living allowance or not as yet. I would like to know if any part of this would have to be paid into the IVA.

Hi,

If you have been granted DLA and/or carers allowance, then you would have been informed of whichever rate you were getting, and when it would be payable from, by DWP. You would have a reference number as well so that if you needed to check anything you could phone up, quote the number, and your questions would be answered.

I'm afraid that hairdos and Health Farm would not be covered by this. The allowance is to help you to live comfortably, not your wife.

It is all counted as income towards an IVA.

I recommend that you speak to a professional. Visit www.iva.com for a list of companies and reviews. Give one or two a ring for free and impartial advice.

Hi Kevin/Kallis

There is a direct payment availible to carers - this is meant to be for the carer and they can use this from holiday/day outs/driving anything that is why is paid to carer direct. Sounds like this is what Kevin is talking about as his wife is the carer

I stand corrected. However your DLA needs to be middle or higher rate personal care in order to receive it.

Hi Kallis

Think we have confused everyone - these one off payment are locally assessed (no mention) of them being affected by DLA etc (see extract below)

"Direct payments are local council payments available for anyone who has been assessed as needing help from social services. You can normally get them if you are a carer aged 16 or over."

I was just looking at what we get, and then looked at DirectGov.

I do stand corrected if I'm wrong.

It may be because, i would have thought that in Kevin/wife case social workers are involved - either at home or in hospital. Assessed the situ and applied for the carer allowance for the wife (it locally funded)unlike the DLA.
Google "carers payment"

Kevin - once we all understand the allowance - hopefully will give you the answer your looking for :-)
