Can the bank say no to opening an account?

Thanks Melanie, the buisness is working on site repairing and maintaining machinery. Could possibly use one account but the customers are rather large organisations and it may not look good if they are making cheques out to me rather than a buisness. However it could be possible but would have to gauge response. Can the bank say no to opening an account?

Yes - your bank can say no, but so long as you are not requiring an overdraft facility then this should be possible.

Why not consider a trading style such as "Melanie Giles Site Services" (Obviously with your name not mine!!). In that way, you can justify putting the money in your existing account, and then when the business is a little more established ask for a separate account.

There are companies which will offer you a business account - I think www.secretariatservices is recommended by some forum members, but I gather the charges are quite expensive.
