can my husband still apply to become a special if he has a IVA I understand that once you have the job work places can be accomadating but he really wants to become a police officer and going through the specials and then applying later suits us better due to child care commitments as I already have a job he needs to be available for the children while I am at work and he will fit the work in around that, but I am worried that his application could be refused.

Yes, although organisations like the Police have tightened their HR policies around personal indebtedness, I would speak to the recruitment team and explain the situation as they will credit check at some stage of the recruitment.

Your husband is addressing his debts in a positive way and this should not be a bar to an application to the Police. I know several Police officers who are in IVA's and even been declared bankrupt.

Good luck and let us know how he gets on.

Definitely - there should be no barrier to him applying if he has a current IVA. In my experience, the Police Forces have actually made their recruitment policies more flexible with regard to people who are managing their debts responsibly.

Good luck with his application. It depends very much on which force it is and their current policy.

My force would have dismissed me if I went bankrupt, but accepted an application for an iva. I was a serving police officer at the time though and not an applicant.

Having debt in the services does not come without its problems. There was an expectation to attend social events that are or can be costly. I always had to decline and this caused me lots of grief.
My line manager always wrote 'not a team player' on my annual review using the social events as evidence which I annually argued.
Also I found myself asking a colleague to attend jobs that involved lost/found monies with me, as on occasion the loser claims that there was a larger sum than we had, and if I felt that my integrity was in question should there be an issue. I tried to keep my iva a secret but after a while it became common knowledge.

Tea funds etc can cause issues as I just didn't have the money so I opted out of tea/coffee. It was all complicated and you get judged.

Being a Special is a great experience. (I served for a number of years before joining the job)The issues I highlight were personal to me and his experience could be very different. As a Special he will not be there every day so can avoid the problems I had in the main, but please go in with open eyes.

Good luck to you both.
