Max -- don't be sucked in by a "no fees" claim -- they ALL charge for IVA's !!
My opinions are merely that .. opinions based on experience. Always seek professional advice.

Thanks Bryn I'll try to call Melanie Giles tomorrow- like you said she is highly thought of and maybe she can help me sort out this wreck my life is.
Foggy - how can they say no fees and then charge? That's really bad.

Thanks for all the help ladies & gents, I really do appreciate it. I just feel so stupid and low and cry a lot. How can I sort out this if I'm a sobbing mess! I need to toughen up.

Hi MaxB.

There are lots of companies that do not charge for the initial debt advice however if you go on to do an IVA there will be fees that come out of the money you pay into the IVA.

You should not feel stupid, you have taken the most difficult step which is facing up to the fact you have a debt problem and then seeking advice to solve the problem.

Nobody knows what is going to happen in the future and life can throw lots of unexpected things at us so think positive as you will find a solution :-)

Hi Max -- as Kelly explained, the fees come out of your monthly repayment. However, some firms "dress this up" and allow you to think they are working for free -- which, to my mind, does not bode well for an open and honest working relationship.

Don't feel stupid --- you have recognised a problem and are dealing with it -- it IS a steep learning curve and don't be afraid to ask any questions.

Ah ok that makes sense. I'll do a bit more searching tomorrow and call a couple more people.
I'll probably have more questions for you all soon!!
