I've been checking the database daily to see when my name comes off (probably too soo as i've not got the completion certificate). But i've noticed something rather worrying. I used the autotype url that it had posted the page back to and it returned EVERYONE in the insolvency database.

To put this in perspective as a computer programmer, I could write a program in a bout 5 minutes that gathered all the information that sits in this database, so all the date of births, addresses etc and store it in my own. This could then be used to send those annoying letters.

I just did a compliant on there website whether it will get looked at is another issue and how long its been like this would explain the annoying letters we all get for the companies that don't pay the insolvency service.

Wow that`s interesting. I always wondered where they got my details from.
Is that foul of the Data Protection laws then?

Id say so - i've said if they don't fix it I will report it to the ICO data controller but was a "feedback" form. I didnt post the url as I didnt want it causing more damage :).

Awesome. Do you think insolvents get less protection than, lets say, MP`s lists on a database[}:)]

Please can you contact me off-line about this fingers. I have an ongoing project to challenge the publicity of the register, and information like this will be very helpful.

Mel, just seen your post and as graduate in computer science getting details off website is so simple that a switched on 12 year old could do it. However a simple program would not suffice becuase the server(where the data is held) would detect mass information being accessed and would sense a problem so should either block that IP address or just down the site till its reviewed. Also the website can track who has visted thier site, and what they have done and for how long. there is no reason that someone would stay on the site for a long time so the server would sense an error and either time out or shut down. As much as hate the register the data would be fairly secure and not easily downloaded-able. Since the digital age has come upon us companies hire the very best staff to see how secure thier data is. I feel if you used this in your fight you would lose credabilty. sorry

Although I teach IT in a FE College I don't know enough about programming to know the answer to this. However, we've lots of very respected lecturers from the Uni and if I can think of a way to broach the subject I will ask them.

A young lad (20) in my home town this week has been sentenced to two years for hacking, his victims included the Pentagon, the CIA, the NHS, Sony, 20th Century Fox and Arizona State Police.

Well that's quite interesting, just searched register for surname starting b, all courts, and results listed 33,911 entries returned with 2261 pages starting from A. Bit too easy to list everyone I think.
All the best,

Mel,

I am sure if you contacted the register and spoke to them about thier data and how often they are "penetraction tested" (ethical hacking they should give you the information. I think if anyone actully invested time in doing this and used data for anything other than information they would be breaching the DPA. Also writting a program that complicated to try and fleece money from people who are insolvent would not make sense becuase they would get caught within hours.

Mel, feel to PM me if you want to dicuss this further.

It is plastic daft - Whilst i am against cold calling from the register, i do be believe that the information should remain open to those to seek it.
I have used the register and company house records - to check on contractors prior to signing any contracts for work on the house.

I think it should be on a need to know basis and potentially a chargeable service to veiw. Why should all my details be out in the open for everyone to see, I was never a criminal just someone who hit on hard times and was resolving them to the best of my ability.
