To get a Coop Cashminder account if there is no branch nearby, just contact them by phone and they will send the application form out. You then have to take 2 forms of ID into the Post Office, get them to check them against the originals and validate this, and then send everything off to the Coop. The Post Office is supposed to charge for this (about £7 I think), but some do not.
If I've got myself a savings account that is surplus I've decided to start saving for daughters wedding even if it's only a tenner a month it all adds up.
IVA final payment left the bank on the 26th January 2013...looking forward to a debt free future.
I'm saving a tenner a month in a savings account for hubby's 60th birthday next year - like you say it all adds up and means I'll be able to get him a special present!
That's a great idea Lesley, I will still find something to use mine for as I needed one anyway but that card would have come in very handy
And thanks for the tip Debt Tired, great that you can go to the Post Office to sort it. By the time I've paid for petrol and parking to get to the nearest Co-Op branch i'll end up more than £7 down, so it would be much better and easier to go into the Post Office. This forum is a fountain of knowledge

Just an update on the Instant Saver card - I received it and it is a blue card (different shade of blue to the basic account card) and I have been advised that it will not work at the 24/7 petrol pumps but SHOULD work at all cash machines, not just Natwest/RBS ones. I will test this out as soon as poss and get back to you. I also upgraded my Basic account to the Select Silver account to make use of the mobile phone insurance and other bits (no overdraft) so I should receive that new card in a few days to replace my Basic card. Not sure what colour it will be yet (blue doesn't work at 24/7 petrol pumps, purple does) but I've heard that when you apply for one of these accounts you will only get a purple card if your credit score/history with the bank is good, just like when you apply for an overdraft as it kind of the same thing. Because the purple card doesn't authorise transaction amounts immediately (hence why it will work at the petrol pumps) there is, understandably, some risk to the bank - especially if you have no overdraft. So I doubt it'll be a purple "full fat" card. The 2 different shades of blue cards (basic and normal) authorise the transaction amount immediately so if you don't have enough money in your account it will decline your card.
Hope this makes sense, I wish they had just stuck with the Visa Debit/Visa Electron branding just so we all knew where we stood, but hey ho. Must make sure I have a full tank of petrol at all times now!

I got mine too yesterday mummy2elliekate, kept the account and it's showing in my online banking with a £0.00 balance. I will start saving for daughter's wedding once I get a few spare pennies.

I have a co op cashminder account with a visa debit card which thankfully I can use at the petrol pumps. My nearest branch is 18 miles away. I rely on the online banking which I find excellent. On the odd occasion I've needed to get to the branch I've been able to take a short detour on the way home from work. I'm so glad people on here recommended the co op to me. [:D]
Thanks for that, had lots of good things said about the Co-Op account. I now have 3 bank accounts with Natwest so should probably stop! But it's definitely food for thought, maybe the other half should open an account with them just so he has a card for emergency petrol x
