HSBC and First Direct just trawl the Insolvency Register - they don't care whether you are BR or IVA they just shut accounts down.

One thing with Nationwide is that you can use any cashpoint.

Yes I was definitely told I couldn't have a debit card and HSBC were actually recommended to me by Payplan! Seems I've been given duff information all round! I obviously joined them between closing my Lloyd's account ( who I owed money to) and the start of my IVA. So although I've finished paying my IVA it will still be on my credit file until November - will this not stop me getting an account with anyone else? Maybe I might be better waiting until November and then trying to get a proper grown ups account at a different bank! I'm not even interested in having one with an overdraft or anything, I just want a simple debit card!!

Jmm, I went over to a co-op cashminder when going into my IVA, and, at the same time as a belt and braces job, applied to Nat West. I was offered both accounts! However I find that the cashminder does everything I want it to and that is the one I use.

To be honest, once I am "out the other side" I will probably stay with the cashminder !
My opinions are merely that .. opinions based on experience. Always seek professional advice.

I've only got a Santander Basic Account. I have a cash card but not a debit card. What I did do just before my IVA is order a pay as you go mastercard and this is what has got me through the IVA in terms of ordering anything on line or over the phone. This is not credit as like with a pay as you go phone you top it up with the money before you use it. Various ones on the market now.

Now I have finished my IVA I would dearly love a normal Santander current account...not desparate at moment, but might give it ago once my credit file is clean. The only problem is if they ask the question about insolvency on the application (which they do)I am likely to get automatically turned down by them? If banks start using the word 'ever' on their mortgage and account applications and rejct you on that alone then that means if you have been in an IVA you are then doomed for life which is unfair as you are probably a safer better than a lot of other people...hmm another unexpected hurdle to get over.:(

Why don't you try the Co-op? You'll get a debit card with them.

Hi Harpic,

It is just the kerfuffal of changing banks. I would rather stay with Santander. I've been with them over 6 years now. They were not one of my creditors. I changed before my IVA as I was with Lloyds TSB and they were one of my creditors. Does anyone know if banks automatically say no on the application if you answer yes to the question 'ever' or do they then check credit file and insolvency register and if that is clean and clear will say yes?

If you say yes to the question then they will check you - I have no idea whether or not Santander will refuse you an upgrade.

You might be better off going into the branch to get them to sort it.

Hi Harpic,

when you say 'check' do you mean the insolvency register as my credit file would be part of the check process anyway?

I have thought about going into a branch when the time is right in case they can assess me manually and make a decison rather than letter a computer make the decison.

They wont be able to "check you out" The only information they will have is what you put on your application form, any information that the bank currently hold and what is on your credit file and in the public register.

Public Register: This will have gone from here once the IVA completed or should have.

Credit Reference Agency : Will have gone from here 6 years from when the default date and IVA date this data will have gone.

Bank Data. This ones a bit more tricky, they will have records of your old accounts, possibly any searches that they do to maintain your account too. Also many banks are part of a wider group of accounts like Halifax and Lloyds :-( They will also most likely share data :-(

Going into the branch to apply might be the best way, but they can still say no. And they will still ask "The Question". It's how you'd feel answering that question truthfully in front of someone face to face you then have to consider.

My view on the question, everything on a application is "credit scored" by the bank. You need to know really how much weight they give to answering yes to the question, if it then precludes you from applying then why bother wasting my time and theirs. Trouble is the banks wont tell you until you do apply so you end up in a decline spiral further affecting your ability to get mortgage elsewhere :-(
