Just a quick question. Do people who are in an IVA managed the odd holiday? Not talking about expensive holidays abroad, but more modest ones, say, staying with relatives or friends?

Today (15/09/11) I start my journey to a debt free future ~ happy days!
A lot of people do manage to get away. Some use the Sun holidays. I've been fortunate in that my daughter paid for us to go to Egypt two years ago and my parents are paying for us to go to Turkey for a week next month.

It is possible, we were able to make some savings from our allowances and my OT's overtime share so that we could take a break now and then. We were given a tent which was a great help and took mainly shorter breaks e.g. 4 - 5 days. That way we didn't have to stretch the money so far, also we used house keeping allowance to pay for food so no increased expenditure there. Camping is not everyone's cup of tea, I know, but we love it and will continue to do it even though our IVA is at an end now. We also combined B & B and camping a couple of years ago which was quite economical and meant we didn't spend the whole break in the tent. Some posters on here have also been able to take holidays further a field with help from families etc.
We've been camping twice while in the IVA. We use our food allowance as normal to feed us while away and take loads of pasta, rice and sauces etc withus. In fact as there aren't shops in your face we spent less of our allowances while away camping. We have our own cooker etc so easy to eat instead of going out.. Also turn off electrics and boiler off while away to save a little extra
We have had a holiday last year and this year through the sun, yes it's a caravan holiday but we have been abroad both times to Holland. We use our tesco vouchers for our ferry. The petrol and food is no more than our allowance. We have gone in May both years which is just after mine and my husbands birthday's where family kindly gave us euro's for our presents.
This week is so important and it is the only week in the year we have time off as a family as all our other annual leave covers childcare.
It is possible but takes a little planning in advance. I seem to enjoy these holidays more as I love a bargain.[:D]
I think it is important to try and get away for even a short break. I'm fortunate in that both of mine have been funded by family - I just save a bit of spending money from my allowances. Going fully inclusive means that I don't have to worry about eating and drinking costs!!

My wife and kids have just spent a week in a caravan owned by a family member. It is only 30 minutes away but near the coast so the kids loved it.
I stayed at home (as we took overlapping holidays so the kids could have 3 weeks with one/both/other of us over the summer). I stayed there on Friday night and spent the day on the beach with them. That is as far as I'll get this year.
We did have a night booked in a Travelodge in Edinburgh but have had to pull out because of the cost of the rail fare.
I agree that it's important to try and get away once in a while. I've actually got a long weekend booked for the end of the month (booked it a while ago). Just a couple of nights in a Travelodge with my daughter. Should be a nice break, and I've got a small amount of spending money to take with me too.

Today (15/09/11) I start my journey to a debt free future ~ happy days!
My family all live in Manchester so I often go there, I tend to use the Travelodge deals such as £9.00 or £15.00 @ night and then fit in a weekend with my family. Apart from the room all else is provided by my family so it's a cheap break for us. Last November MIL paid for a week in Gran Canaria for hubby (I just went along) and in January next year I turn the big 50 and my children are plotting something....but still unsure what!
IVA final payment left the bank on the 26th January 2013...looking forward to a debt free future.
I'm looking forward to finding out where you're going as well Lesley!!

Must admit I enjoy a holiday abroad rather than in the UK - I love the sun and heat.

Holidays - one thing the wife won't give up!!! Well she is a travel agent & in past we have had cracking deals. Pity there not as good as they were. She does get staff benefits & without that we wouldn't go away. Luckily we are managing a trip to the canaries but have had to go all inclusive & down grade compared to Pre IVA time.
One tip for post IVA people last week in June first 10 days in July is always cheapest to go abroad. £150 b&b in Greece, Spain or turkey. Yes I know you need spending money but it is possible to spend very little abroad. My boss lives on €15 or less a day.
The road is 72months long starting September 2010.
