Do not even get me started on car insurance!! Mine has gone up even though I have been with the same company for 4 years. After a lot of shopping around, even the cheapest is still £100 more than last year. Out of interest I did it to my parents address up North and it was £200 cheaper!! Maybe I need to return to my roots!! ha ha! x

Especially as in the press today I heard if you don't insure your car it can be removed and crushed, but the insurance industry is not making it easy for the likes of us frugal people who budget everymonth to make our direct debit payments. I hope my renewal is ok next month:-)

You have to declare it SORN, that way you are fine but it cannot be on a public highway.

You'll have no problem with monthly payments Suzanne.

I thought SORN was for vehicle tax only. The way I understood the current proposal was that if you own you have to insure it, whether it was in use or not and irrespective of where it is kept.

Certainly needs clarifying

Look at this website - if a vehicle is SORN, then you don't have to have insurance:

Well have been in our joint IVA for 20 months and when our car insurance was up for renewal the company I had been with for 20 years increased our premium from £360pa to £1100. So we told them to jump. However, we cannot get any of the standard companies to insurance us with monthly premiums so unless I can find the £399 up front and as you know with an IVA the likely hood of having that amount of spare money any one month is as likely as snow in death valley we have no choice but to pay through the nose for monthly insurance with ecar and so we get a new policy every month for the some of £95. What annoys me is that I have never missed an insurance payment and if we could find the £399 we would be better of by £95 for 8 months of the year but no! Aaargh..

Just some advice for people who are paying monthly for their car insurance. I am out of my IVA and this October (6 years after my IVA started) my credit file will be sorted, it seems that car insurance companies are starting to credit check people who pay monthly for their insurance.

I've always paid monthly with no problem but this year I've been told I can't do this only pay up front the whole amount for the year (lucky I am able to afford this way) Also on checking my Equifax file they have checked this.

It's strange this has only happened now probably the industry is tightening up. I was paying them every month through direct debit.

Have you tried the Co-op? A lot of people on here have got insurance with them and they are usually reasonable.

Ask for a payment break to pay for the insurance and increase your IVA payment by the amount of your insurance divided by 12 so you make the payment up over the 12 months.

I wonder sometimes if being in a iva affects the cost of the insurance, so not only can we no longer pay monthly but the cost to insure ourselves over someone who is not in a iva is more expensive.

Just a thought on this, as I see a number of creditors on the comparisson sites have quoted ridiculous figures. x3 or x4 the cheapest quote.

I took out insurance recently with Diamond on a monthly basis without any problems. They may be worth a try. The credit check is because we take out an annual contract so if we default they do theoretically lose out...its not a rolling monthly contract.

We asked for a quote on all the web sites for my husband who has been driving a oompany vehicle for 14 years but lost his job, we were quoted and this is the cheapest £1140 for a scrap heap worth about £500 and that was with an excess of £600 and all to be paid up front, needless to say he has to bus it
ITS OVER WE ARE FINALLY DEBT FREE, CERTIFICATE ARRIVED

Insurance prices are a joke! They'll do what successive governments have been trying to do for the past decade with petrol price hikes and force us all off the road onto public transport.

When you get your new hiked up renewal price... shop around on the internet for a better quote, then ring your insurance company and tell them that you can get it cheaper elsewhere. When I did that, at the risk of losing business, they juggled their figures and dropped their newly hiked price by around £100.00. I accepted the new quote, didnt' need to change companys so no credit check. Makes you wonder why they didn't offer that price in the first place.

I've never had a problem with getting monthly insurance for anything and I've not had a huge price hike either.
