Hi everyone just plucked up courage to post after a week or so of reading all the great posts on here, been a great help thank you all. Have signed up with Melanie Giles (Susan Clay)this week,A big thankyou to Tina for all her help & advise, and calming influence too !! so busy trawling through every thing to get all info together. A pretty shamefull mess really to cut a long story short, MBNA £7,000, Halifax £9,000, Barclaycard £11,000, loan £7,000, O/D £700 & HMRC tax £9,000 + this last years liabilaty yet to be calculated, Self employed sole trader with no assets except my work truck worth 11 to 12k & tools, D.I of about £350. Have been reading comments on other websites and have heard "through the grapevine" that hmrc always reject IVA's so was wondering if anyone had any experience with similar cercmstances? would an IVA have any chance of success? As they are the largest creditor if they voted againest the IVA would it fail? terrifed of bankruptcy as the guilt of not being able to pay back is unbelievable, at least with IVA we stand a chance of paying some back. All debts are in my name but my wife is worried litrally sick & we're both struggling to cope at the moment to be honest. Any advice please.

HMRC do not reject IVAs as a matter of course. They have criteria they work to and Mel will go through this with you. She is known for being thorough!! It is one hell of a shock totting it all up and best done with a stiff drink! Try to relax knowing that you are part of a very supportive forum and that you have instructed one of the best IPs in the business to act for you. PS - welcome on board xx

Welcome from me as well.

You have chosen a great team and Susan comes highly recommended as well. They will do their best for you.

The forum is also here for advice and support and we have a great social section as well! I agree with Lesley that you should get your wife to have a look in and see all the success stories - maybe have a read of the blogs.

We've all been where you are and lived to tell the tale!!

Hi Spook,

I'm also self employed and have had no problems with HMRC and my IVA. Though they did give me a new self assesment reference and I had to re-register for online filing with the new reference. I guess they do this because it's dealt with by a different HMRC department and they can keep an eye on it. Good luck. [:)]

Hi Ivamazzie
I think the reason you are given a new Ref No by HMRC is you are given a fresh start, and any issues pre IVA will not have any impact on your moving forward

Thank you all for the warm welcomes & advice, we have spent hours reading on here today and it really is reasuring, but soon as you go away from it the black cloud drops again!! Havn't read much feedback about Susan here which is a bit worrying presume Mel must be snowed under. Sent letters out to all creditors today & and all info we have at the moment to Angela so waiting for the phone to start ringing next week,Had letter from HRMC wanting £875/mth till december to clear arrears before next January payment due.

Hi Spook, Mel thinks very highly of Susan and that's recommendation enough!!!

The phone calls are difficult so brace yourselves. Some people prepare a script to read, some don't answer the phone, some unplug the phone and some refuse to answer the security questions which stops the conversation in its tracks. You'll find what suits you. Importantly, don't be bullied by them and remember that you are PROTECTED by the IVA process now.

Keep on posting and reading. It is a sanity check for lots of us so you're never alone here x

Susan is an IP in Mel's company so that should be recommendation enough.

As to the calls, agree with what BOL has said but I'd also think about changing your phone number - that way you can't get any calls from creditors at all.

Hi Spook. A lot of the good things you read here about Mel also refer to "Team Mel". Although Mel and Tina are the shining lights on the forum, there are all the unsung heroes in Team Mel that also do sterling work.
My opinions are merely that .. opinions based on experience. Always seek professional advice.

Our IVA was accepted last November, our IP is Susan and our case manager is Angela, they are both absolutely fantastic. We cannot speak highly enough about them both. They were both always available to answer our endless questions and give reassurance. You are in safe hands!

Thanks again everyone, some very reassuring words there & yes Angela is our case manager too. Sounds like we have made the right Choice with team Mel, did speak to couple of other firms as surgested on here but found ourselves coming back to Mel all the time. I've read about problems with HMRC post IVA when self-employed but can't find out what problems, any ideas?

Hey Spook (and wife today?) - I don't want to pre-empt Susan as I don't understand it well enough to make myself clear. I'm sure Susan and Angela won't mind you calling up with a specific query. SE clients always get a face to face meeting too so you can always prepare a list of questions to ask.

It is a requirement that self employed have to have a face to face meeting but I know that Mel's team do not mind any of their clients ringing up with a query.
