hi agin i dont know if anyonw can help but i received a letter today from child tax credits asking if my childcare cost were right. My girls stopped going to nursery in July so I stopped paying then but totally forgot what with one thing and another and now I am worried that I am going to get into really big trouble? i tried calling the number but they were constantly engaged and now they are closed and not open til Monday. It was a genuine error on my part and the tax credit people say until I have spoekn to the other number on the letter they cant change it. I am now thinking the worst :-(

Hi Hoobily, I think what might happen will be that you need to repay the overpayment, it's a genuine oversight, I don't know much about tax credits but do know some posters have been overpaid before and this is recouped by Tax Credits. Keep trying the number but not sure if they operate at the weekend, it will say on the letter I'm sure. x
IVA final payment left the bank on the 26th January 2013...looking forward to a debt free future.

hi thanks. I called the standard tax credits number again and told them I wanted them to change it and hopefully they have and they will just collect the overpayment which is what i wanted. Its just this letter really sent me into a panic!

I would think you'll hear from them very soon and hopefully they'll explain how they'll recoup the money owed. All the best hoobily. x

Hi Hooblily
I know that tax credits do randon checks on child care costs and suspect you are part of this procedure. All they will do is correct your file and reduce your tax credits until the overpayment of child care costs are collected. Its quite normal as a lot of people forget they must notify changes within one month, so no big trouble here just the nuisance of having your payments reduced until it has been repaid

Yes thank you ever so much. It's just the way that they have worded it that makes me think that I am in a load of trouble. I had so much going on in the summer with the girls starting school and they had their tonsils out as well which needed to be sorted that my Tax Credit completely slipped my mind. Thank you all so much for your help though

A friend of mine told them when she started working full time, expecting her money to be reduced but they kept paying her the same amounts,24 months later after she had phoned them at least 6 times and written on numerous occasions they sent a nasty letter saying that she had been overpaid and would reduce her credits to zero for 19 months to recoup the money!!

She had most of the money in a savings account and they wouldnt accept a one off payment to sort things out. They are very hard to work with.

Discharged today the 8th feb 2012. View is much brighter now.
Continuing to rebuild our credit worthiness.

I think that applies to anything to do with HMRC PD! I'm repaying a small underpayment and I asked if I could repay it in one go and I was told that I could, but they would have to contact another department who would send out a paying in slip, which I would then return to yet another department with a cheque. I decided that there would be too many people involved and the cheque was bound to go missing!

A friend of mine had a cheque for a rebate and the bank lost it. When she contacted HMRC they told her they aren't allowed to cancel cheques and she would have to wait at least 6 months and then they would review it!

If a private company was as badly organised as HMRC they would go under!

I rang tax credits up earlier this year (cant remember what about) and they said to me "I notice you are in an IVA" - i was shocked to say the least that they actually knew this information. Think I posted on here about it! How they knew i have no idea, but certainly not from me!

Hi Hoobily
The reference to Credit Reference agencies is because Tax Credits are introducing a new security system in partnerhip with Experian, they do not do credit checks on claiments to my knowledge, but this enables them to ask additional questions to attempt to stop the enormous numbers of fraudulent claims. I would love to comment more on these tales but I know how difficult it is on the other side dealing with these types of problems all day and being judged on the nmber of calls you take and how long it takes to complete actions afterwards. I am not immune to HMRC problems either as am still trying to get on the correct tax code[:0]

Oh right. Its fine with me I have nothing to hide I just think that they could word their letters a bit better as I got really worried about forgetting.
