I am just starting the process of an IVA with Payplan...i have sent in all my information apart from the reasons why i'm nearly 40k in debt. Firstly do i have to write a lengthy detailed story explaining why (it will be the usual marriage breakdown, 0% credit cards turning into 34% credit cards etc..) and secondly i am leaving my bank and have now applied and been approved for the Co-Op basic current account and also Nationwide Cash card+ account. My dilemma is that the Co-Op have been brilliant in setting everything uo including internet banking over the phone but there is not a branch within thirty miles of where i live. The Nationwide, however, were much slower in sending out the card and internet banking is taking forever to set up but they have two branches in the town i live as well as one where i work. Although i rarely have been in my previous bank,it is handy to go in and talk or pay cash in without having to queue at the post office (which is what i will have to do with the Co-Op.
My heart says Co-Op but head says Nationwide.
Any recommendations ?!?!?

Hi Momantai

Why not open both (unless you have to pay salary into the accounts). I have a basic account with the Coop. They are slightly more local to me but I rarely need to visit the branch. Their internet banking facilities are excellent...and the same goes for telephone banking. They even allowed a 2nd account into which I can transfer what little spare cash I have to stop me spending it...

Thanks for the replies. I opened both on the same day about 15 days ago. Co-Op over the phone and Nationwide by post and received my Nationwide card today.Co-Op were much quicker sending the card and have sent the pin number and sorted internet banking out already. As i said co op just seem so much more efficient and helpful, so i think my head says go with them. I will be having wages paid in and direct debits as well. Interesting times ahead!!

We all have to write the reasons we go into debt unfortunately.

Well done on opening the accounts, just go with ever suits you.

Hope Nationwide are better for you than they have been for me!

I've got accounts with the Co-op and Nationwide and I have to say I really rate the Co-op's customer service, much better than Nationwide.

Nationwide is totally rubbish at the moment - they will be getting the letter from hell next week from me!

Thankfully I haven't had to contact them recently, but I've not been impressed when I have - I get fed up with pressing buttons for a start!

I don't have the buttons option - I keep having to say 'something else' which really does annoy me!

Still no pin numbers! They are going to get one hell of a complaint as and when a number comes through! They won't know what has hit them!

That's appalling Jan! I haven't phoned them for a while so I hope they haven't changed from buttons to speaking - buttons are bad enough, but no way am I going to look and sound like a complete muppet speaking when there's no one there!

Believe me, they have. It starts with the 'something else' then you have to key in your account number and date of birth and then you get put through to a real person!

The one saving grace is that is a UK call centre - then again I dial the 0800 number, not the 0845 so whether that makes a difference I don't know.

Almost three weeks after receiving my card and I still can't use it in a cashpoint or in a store!

From your moans and groans and my head already thinking Co-Op, Who have always answered the phone straight away it,i think my mind is now 100% and i'll use the Nationwide as a "back up" If i do get my IVA approved would it be ok to put say £10 a month in the Nationwide or is that classed as "Savings" (not that i am thinking i will have a spare tenner but you never know! still new to all this but just reading through this forum and starting the ball rolling and a great weight already seams to have been lifted, whatever the outcome in a few weeks.

You can have a spare tenner and save it, so use Nationwide for your savings. Most IPs will encourage that. Use it for your contingency allowance so you know how much you have to fall back on.

thanks for the advice and gonna tell work to put my wages into the Co-Op from now on. Be kinda wierd having a plus balance for the first time in many many years, even though i will still be mega overdrawn in my old account, it will be a nice feeling to finally start afresh. Hopefully by xmas life will be much better than it has been for a long time :)

Co-op will be better. I'm still steaming about Nationwide and there will be such a snotty letter going off in the next couple of weeks!

They don't mess with me!
