Hi,

I've been to my local branch of NatWest today to open a new bank account, just a basic one. I told them that I was in an IVA, which they didn't consider to be a problem.

Part of the application process was a credit check using Equifax. The result of this stated that I was Bankrupt instead of in an IVA. I've checked on the Individual Insolvancy Register at www.insolvency.gov.uk and it confirms an IVA and not Bankrupcy.

What's the best and most straightforward course of action to rectify this with Equifax and possibly other credit reference agencies?

Thanks

Some companies class an IVA and BR as the same, and you won't convince them otherwise, my mortgage provider did this and Natwest have done it before. It has nothing to do with your creit reference which will show you as being in an IVA.

Try using a different bank for a account. The Co-op come highly recommended.

We had this problem with Nat West when I tried to open an account even though we took in all our IVA paperwork.

just like us at Halifax, when we opened daughters account and then the assistant tried to make our account online, and then blurted out "daft question but have you been bankrupt" in front of our 14 year old!

Hi,

Had the same problem with Sainsburys Bank (they use BoS for their facilities), they turned me down for a savings account stating I was an undischarged bankrupt!!

I told them what they could do with their account! I managed to open accounts with Co-op, NS&I (Savings account for rainy day) and local building society (Car Maintenance fund) no problems or need to disclose previous problems.

Thank you everyone for your replies.

You're correct about the credit agencies, I've got the Equifax report and it states IVA and not BR.

The account I need is a basic business account, Natwest have asked me to take in my Equifax report and IVA details and they will try to override their system.

Failing that, does anyone know of a basic business account for IVA's elsewhere? The Co-op have suspended their business accounts (unless you are a member of FSB or have a charity based business).

I'm with the Natwest and can't right now remember when I applied for the account so couldn't truthfully say if I was in the IVA or not. If they can override the systems it would be worth it as their Step account is a good one. x
IVA final payment left the bank on the 26th January 2013...looking forward to a debt free future.

Stupid thing with Sainsburys is that I have just taken out pet insurance, paying monthly, and it was accepted straight away! No credit check done at all.
