With petrol costs going up and up does any one know what you are allowed to take in to account on your I/E. I travel by car 3/4 times a week which is a 68 mile round trip. Can I add this in my I/E Petrol allowance and if so how do they work it out. My business miles is claimed at 40p a mile but my employer pays this to me but not travel to/from work. Any ideas welcome.

Your non-expensed petrol costs should/can be quoted in full on your i&e. Obviously you cant predict what the cost of fuel will be in the future so just base it on an average of the last couple of months - that's what I did anyway - if theres a stupid increase in price it can be addressed at an annual review one would hope.

Your travel expenses in work will be fine, I often have to claim them and you will already have paid the money out.

As regards other travel, then you should put down what you spend. Our fuel expenses have gone up these year, I upped what we claimed and it was allowed.

Any really large hikes in anything should be brought to your IP's attention now so that you are not struggling.

I think we're all feeling it with the ever rising price of fuel. I know I am, I upped my allowance this year but again it continues to rise and we continue to struggle and try 'not' to use the car so much.

Depending upon the fuel type and cc rating of your car, I would have thought you ought to be allowing around £200 per month to cover the cost of your petrol.

Thanks for the replies everyone. My car is a 2009 fiesta petrol not sure of cc but will check. I know when I travel from peterborough to cambridge it costs £12 each time so Melanie is not far out. Should I keep receipts?

Hi
Travel costs for work is an expense that creditors must allow in full, there is no problem having to prove your costs and creditors are quite within their rights to ask for this proof

I would keep the receipts then at least if you're asked you have a record of what you're paying.

I have a 55 reg 1.4l Fiesta and I haven't filled it up from empty for quite a while, but I dread to think how much it'll cost!

I had a laugh at a petrol station the other day when an elderly woman walked in to ask if someone could check under her car as she thought she must have a fuel leak because she had put in £70 of unleaded and the tank still wasnt full!!!!
I pointed out that the price has gone up a lot recently[:)]
Discharged today the 8th feb 2012. View is much brighter now.
Continuing to rebuild our credit worthiness.

We have a Mazda3 1600 petrol automatic and that drinks fuel! If we get down to 1/4 tank and put £30 in, it doesn't even get to 3/4!

Will not be having one of those again when we change it!
