You cannot split debts that you are jointly and severally liable for. Unfortunately, you are both responsible for the whole debt under these circumstances.

A holiday sounds good!!!!

So are we committed to these joint debts regardless of what happens. As we are seperated now I was hoping we could contact our lenders to split the debts so I would take my half and she would take hers and then we went it alone so to speak....

I doubt they will do that as you are both jointly and severally liable for the debt.

The creditors don't look at it as though you owe half each, you are both liable for the whole amount and they will chase you for this.

However, you will only pay the original amount back.

You are both responsible for it as Melanie says.
