I have been offered a good job in canada. Our IVA is about to be presented to our creditors - will I still be allowed to take the job? - they say that I might have to remain in the UK 6 months each year for the duration of the IVA which will run for 5 years.

Hi starfury and welcome to the forum

I see no reason for you not to take the job in Canada, and you certainly will not be required to remain in the UK for six months each year by your IP. Who is it that is telling you this? I have many clients living abroad, and with electronic communciation as it is, have no problems in managing their cases for them.

Go for the job. Canada is such a lovely country.

Dear Melanie
Thankyou for your quick reply.
We were living off our credit cards until we realised we could not reduce the amount every time we made a payment, because of the recent spate of interest rises. So we rang a company called Spectrum. We agreed to see an advisor. He was with us for over 2 hours and said we were in a downward spiral, with no way out. Our debts are in the region of £42000. Based on our incomes, we would pay £400 per month for 5 years. Since he came to us we have since learned that Spectrum are just the "introducers", and the company that would be presenting our case to the creditors are called "Stonebridge Insolvency", based in Keighley. We have also since learned that Spectrum have been investigated by BBCs Watchdog programme, for giving wrong advice.
In the meantime I have been to Canada and have been offered a job at an engineering firm in Calgary. The clerk at Stonebridge sounds pretty certain that if we want to go then the IVA will probably get refused. I have already stated that we would give every detail of our whereabouts and wages etc etc.
I really don't want us to go down the bankruptcy route, I have cried more times in the last few weeks than ever for fear of what could happen to us, even thought about suicide, (yes really) I havent slept since the whole thing started, nearly 4 weeks now and dreading the next 2. It's only my wife thats keeping me going.
Please can you help???
Steve

Hi again

What bizarre advice! And you must really stop thinking those darkest thoughts as there is a simple way out of this. An IVA based upon payments of £400 per month (I assume this is taking into account your new earnings?) ought to work, and I would have no problem in presenting that to your creditors. If you would like me to represent you, please contact me via my website, filling in my information questionnaire firstly.

You need to focus upon your move to Canada and the way forward for your family. I am quite envious, as I have twice been to Canada skiing in the Rocky Mountains, and the quality of life out there seems very appealing! One think you will have to be able to provide is an income and expenditure statement based pon your new earnings and new expenditure - so research into Canadian living costs is an absolute must. Has the employer offered you a relocation package?

Hi Starfury, as Melanie says, please stop thinking dark thoughts. There will be a way forward, but please ditch Stonebridge and contact Melanie, as from what you say Stonebridge don't seem to have a clue. You have got the chance of a great new life in Canada for you and your wife, and when your IVA is set up you will be able to go without worrying.

Good luck, and please keep posting to let us know how you get on.

Hi Steve

I just wanted to say, the thoughts are normal when you are so stressed and your only way out seems to have been a con, its just so much easier to hold a gun to your head and get some peace, right? I had these thoughts myself in the beggining and I know its a horrible place to be. However, put the gun down, there is another and far better way (especiaclly for those that love you and would desperately miss you) to get some peace. Melanie has offered this for you, take it, now and you will be able to, live, sleep and smile again. Good luck and please coninue to post so that we know you are OK. We are right there with you and you are not alone in this.
Take care

starfury, you have to do what's right for you and your family. Take the employment in Canada an IVA will not prevent you from leaving. Undergoing financial hardship can cause people to feel very depressed. Focus on the future. A bright future in Canada starting life anew. Your wife sounds like a lovely lady. She's there to emotionally support you through this. Continue to lean on her during your time of need. That's what spouses do (smile)for one another.

I did find this link so you can convert pounds into Canadian dollars to see what the IVA would be per month when you reside in Canada. The link is:

I wish you and your family peace and happiness.

Take care

Dear friends.
Many, many thanks for all your responses. It was such a great comfort to read them all. Obviously we dont know any of you but your words already mean so much. Its 12.45am Sunday morning, my last sleep ended Friday 1pm and I only got in about 3 maybe 4 hours. Jay, seems to be coping better than me.
Unfortunatly Spectrum has had £2000 of our money and I could kick myself for parting with it. We are expecting a phone call on Monday from Stonebridge to see if they can accommodate the Canadian query, but even so both Jay and me feel like calling on Melanie for help. Spectrum and Stonebridge do not put us at ease and for £2000 all we have is a letter to our creditors to stop them sending us letters and threats - which we are still receiving. Dear Melanie - you will be our next port of call if Stonebridge says the wrong thing.

Will keep you all informed.
Kind regards
Steve and Jay :o)

i am sorry you have parted with money already but thought you might have as they wouldn't discuss anything with us until we had, you still have a chance to become free of them and not let them dictate your life.

melanie will look after you and give good honest solid advice and at least then you will know where you are coming from
all the best

starfury, I have learned one thing since using this forum. If Mel G can't help you then no one can. She has 20 years of experience behind her. The people here that have used her skills have been been satisfied. Use her and you are in good hands.
Take care.

Hi again

It is now 2.25 am (by my clock) and I havent slept hardly since thursday night. As I said earlier I felt just as you did and believe me this debt thing really puts you down deeper that I ever thought possible, I havent climbed out yet but the reason I am still been up so long is due to partying and being with friends. I know you have lost a lot of money with this company. Unfortunatly there are people who prey on people in our position but now is not the time to look back, look ahead now, have hope and please take care. Your experience with this company may help/save someone else from them.

Good luck

Good luck.

Starfury,
I second all the comments on here about Melanie! Dont waste any more time and money with Spectrum - contact Mel......you wont regret it!

I was with a large IVA factory before and advice was ok but everything was moving slower than an asthmatic toitoise with a heavy bag of shopping! After finding this forum and going with Melanie, the advice has been 100% and we're moving swiftly towards our debt solution.

Accept the negative thoughts for what they are (a natural reaction to the situation) and let them pass by like big fluffly grey clouds! They will soon disperse! There is sooo much positive life out there for you and you also have sooo much support by the people on this forum!

I wish you well and take care!

Best

Dear Melanie and friends.
We found out today that Spectrum/Stonebridge will not continue with our IVA should we move to canada. We have now decided to employ Melanies services as per all your good recommendations !!
Spectrum have in no uncertain terms have already informed Jay that we are not entitled to any refund, but reading through the small print it seems we may get something back.
We have a good feeling about Melanie and we believe we are doing the right thing - Jay and I will keep you informed as our situation progresses.
For now, all the best.
Steve and Jay
xx

Hi Steve and Jay, I am so glad that you are sounding more positive. Don't feel bad about paying Spectrum - as Lily says there are a lot of companies out there who will take advantage of people in a very difficult and distressing situation. You will get through this, and now that you are with Melanie things are on the up for you! Good luck.
