This sounds like some of the "become a driving instructor" courses that have been advertised. Quite a few people have contacted us in recent times who suffered financial trouble after giving up decent jobs to retrain as driving instructors but then found they could not make the sort of money being mentioned in the adverts.

£4000 sounds like an extraordinary amount to pay to a company none of the experts on this site have heard of.

My experience has been learned through my own debt problems, and the invaluable help from the professionals on here. I still get it wrong and have one helluva lot still to learn.

I'd love to do full time debt advice when my IVA has finished - I'd be approaching a proper debt advice firm rather than going through a college though.

You do fine - you say it as it comes and you are more often right than wrong.

thanks for all advice. Really helping me to make up my mind.... deffinately want to get into this line of work. Part of my job at present is helping people in financial difficulties, and I would like to take it a step further. Have looked into volunteering after reading this, but as I work partime at the moment I cant commit to the hours the CAB want. Have found another company who are looking for Debt advisors, so gonna call them in the morning. I dont mind paying an amount for any beneficial training, and would work hard to make a living, but £4000 is a lot to pay, as you say for a company that none of you have heard of ..... Was hoping that someone would say that they were a good, sound, reputable company!!!! Thanks to all!!! Will let you know how I get on with the other company.......If anyone is interested, that is!!!!!!

Hi,

I recently went for the interview at the debt advisor college and did an aptitude test. The next day I called and was really excited to be told I was accepted. I travelled down to Reading for the interview and the place seemed really professional. I was really disappoint when I was told I had to pay £4,000.00 for the training over a period of about 6days. I thought I could do on the job training. They insited the £4k had to be paid. When I mentioned this to well meaning friends they asked why I had to pay for training up front. I was really disappointed as I thoght I had landed a plum job.

Any advice folks?

Kumsy

To be fair, it does cost a lot to train debt advisors properly and anyone who gets a bill for CPI, JIEB or from the DRF probably does go a bit pale (unless like most people they have a company to pay for it).

Those providers are a world away from what I assume is a franchisee training company offering a few days of sales training. You can do better for yourself by getting on a CAB training course or joining a local firm and getting some practical experience and then some sponsorship to train for a qualification.

Thanks, I would really like to go down the CAB route but as I have a full time job I can't commit 2 days training for one and a half years. The Debt advisor college should actually train and then take the cost of training off from the so called earnings of £1.000.00 a week as it claims in the adverts that are placed in the Metro. I seriouly wonder if they were able to recruit anyone willing to pay £4k. What is the guarantee of obtaining these jobs after doing the training.
