HOMES Mobility scheme

HOMES (Housing Mobility and Exchange Services) is supported by the Government to work with councils and housing associations, offering a range of services that help people move home. The HOMES Mobility Scheme can be used for short or long distance moves. If you are a local authority, housing association or housing co-operative tenant and need to move, you could be eligible to apply if: you are taking up a job which is too far away to travel to every day you need to be closer to relatives or friends so that they can give or receive support there are other pressing reasons such as domestic violence or harassment or health reasons You could also be eligible if you are not a tenant but can demonstrate a housing need to your local authority.

How can I apply for this scheme?

You need to complete a HOMES Mobility Scheme application form, which can be obtained from Housing Services.
It is advisable for you to contact the Authority that you would like to move to, to check whether you will be accepted under this scheme.
Once this form is completed you must send it to the Housing Services team.

What happens next?

The Housing Services team will forward your completed application form to the Authority that you have indicated as the area you need to move to and will contact you to advise you that this has been done.

Once the other Authority has received your form, they will contact you to let you know their decision.

Does the Authority that I would like to move to have to accept me onto their waiting list?
No, it will depend on your circumstances and the type of property that you wish to be allocated.

What if an Authority does not accept me?

You would have to appeal in writing to that Authority detailing the reasons why you feel their judgement is unacceptable.

If I am not accepted through the HOMES Mobility Scheme can I still go on their waiting list?
You would need to contact the Authority to find out the criteria for eligibility for active consideration on their waiting list.
