I know I've seen a thread about this but can I 'eck find it!!!
I want to try to save a bit and need a savings account. I've applied with the co-op for their smart saver but the application has been declined, even though we have the cashminder with them.
Can you suggest other savings acc's for br's or the link to the other thread?
Thanks [:)]

You'll be lucky! You could try Nationwide - although they no longer offer a current account if you are bankrupt I have heard that you might be able to open a savings account.

I tried for a Co-op savings account an apparently I failed their credit check...

Does anyone know if Credit Union's credit score? There's a one local so I could join that.

I think Mish belongs to a credit union and he was BR so I'd think you'd be ok. I looked into joining one but unfortunately there isn't one near me.

I found that too - I'm with the Co-Op and tried to open a savings account and they declined ! It doesn't make sense to me. Surely if you are trying to get your life together, then attempting to save is also a part of that.

It's not as though you are borrowing against the account is it ?

I wouldn't mind as much if they hadn't given me a Cashminder account! They're probably worried that we're going to conceal money from our IP/OR!

Like we've got a few grand tucked away!!! lol.
It is ironic they give you an account, debit card etc with the casminder but they won't give you an acc to save....

Out of interest Chris, did you apply in-branch at the Co-op or was it on the phone/online?

Not sure, just want to have a seperate account so that any spare cash doesn't get spent up. I'll check PO site out

Just looked and it seems you have to open the acc with £500 minimum so that's out of the questiion!!!

I did manage to get a savings account with the coop, I had their cashminder account around seven months, they knew I had debts, I told them everything.

On the other hand I tried to open an account for my son who has his own DLA money and they said unless I was some sort of guarunter (whatever the hell that word is) they wouldnt do it. So I wrote to them saying if you do a credit check on me, your comps will explode but my son is blameless for this. All I am trying to do, bla bla bla is teach bla bla, he has a disablitity and surely has some rights, is not or ever has had terrorist tendancies, etc, etc and could they point out exactly what the problem is in writing please???? I just wanted him to have his money in his own account even though I am (what do you call it ??? recieving his money for him). In the end they did it but sure was difficult. To be honest I dont think they had a realistic answer apart from the computer said no.

I would write and request why youre being declined such a basic account??? I am not sure that there is an interest on savings argument they might have, no experience of banks at all, I do know that basic accounts cost the banks money as there are no credit facilities. If its just a question of their computer says no, I would challenge it, I mean what would be the point of a credit check in our circumstances????

What would be the point of credit checking a savings account full stop. Makes no sense as your not after any credit!

The key is in the name of the account. i.e. savings!

chris..... you will have no chance with any sort of automated online application as the bankruptcy will just pop up and the computer will go "Nooooooo!"

I agree with lily, write to them or pop in branch and explain the situation.

I am going into my branch in the next week or 2 to ask for a savings account, so i'll see what happens.

On a side note, the Post Office account with £500 is their own Saver account.

There is however a National Savings "Easy Access" account with a £100 minimum limit. You get a cash card which you can use at the post office to pay money in, or you can use it at ATM's/PO's to withdraw cash. Might be worth considering if you have the £100 initial deposit.
