I owe various credit cards £5000 - £10,000 since the year 2000 when I ducked out of the system and turned to a cash based world where I'm not even on the electoral roll anymore. Is there a date when these become written off maybe and I'm safe to resurface, or what should I do to try and fix my mess if I'll always have this hanging over me?

You should request a copy of your credit file from Experian (costs £2) and then seek expert advice on the matter.

Six years is usually the norm, but as Ollie says get a credit report to be sure
