we are thinking about going to have a look at a staffie rescue centre for a partner in crime for Casey.. a bit worried how she'll take to it..

Has anybody else took in a younger dog when they have an old one?

We've been advised to get a dog as we have a bitch[:)]

What a wonderful thing to do, there are so many staffies in rescue, to give one a loving home is a wonderful gesture. I've had two rescue dogs and one put from 8 weeks and I actually prefer the rescue dogs, my lab whose photo was on here a few weeks back is a rescue dog. The Cocker I've had from 8 weeks and my lhasa died three years ago when she was 13, we got her when she was 4. All the best x

thanks lesley, i love staffies.. they are so soft and get so much bad press. don't get me wrong I wouldn't leave her alone with my nephew, but I wouldn't leave any dog with a small child. just worried that this may tip Casey over edge as hasn't been well.. but then may give her a new zest for life. DECISIONS DECISIONS!!

They do get a lot of bad press I agree, poor things are the fashion accessory of a certain group at the moment and you just know that the majority are going to end up in rescue. I have two grandchildren and never leave my dogs with them either. The lab ignores everyone he is far too lazy to be rough, the cocker I find is the protector of the little, he loves em and lies beside them. Why not take Casey with you to meet the new addition on neutral ground first, we did that when we added the lab to our family.

Oh Ang, sounds ideal, hope it works out for you, I really do and for Guy, I'm sure he'll be a valued extra member to your family and I love it when they get a new home a caring family and a new chance in life. Dog Rescue is worth its weight in gold.

Hi Ang

I took in a dog from the dogs home an old english sheep dog he was 6. Then one of my dom patients gave me her yorkie. They were lovely together. When Molly the yorkie was old, we got a six week old labrador, she was also a rescue, (puppy farming) they got on fine until Molly went blind and had to be put to sleep.

Good luck.

Incidently lous, the old english was a fantastic dog. We actually went for a small female but I just fell in love with louis, he had sad eyes. Unfortunately he got lymphoma and although it was treated the chemotherapy failed to put him into remission. The older dog might balk at first but ours soon settled down.

The best of luck I am sure you will be fine.

Obviously you have to weigh up the pros and cons of your own circumstances. I used to take lous on home vists with me as he was so well trained, but Molly and Gemma were good company so it really isnt like leaving one dog on its own.

We have a 14 year old Lurcher and two years ago we acquired an 18 month old Heinz 57 (well he does have some Staffie in him but as for the rest.............). The older dog was not enamoured of other dogs, but they get on great. She slaps him down occasionally but on the whole they are great pals. I think he gave her a new lease of life.

All the best for today ang, let us know what you decide, so long as the dogs get on well then I can see no problem so long as their is provision for them to be left alone for that length of time?

Another suggestion which you can totally ignore if you want is to get a new addition when you're on holiday for a week? that way you can get them settled in, leaving them for longer periods throughout your week off to get used to each other. My cocker is the dominanat one in the relationship between my two, but that works well for them as the lab allows it. x

thats what i said to hubby Lesley, as I'm off for 3 weeks in summer.. might wait until then.. saying that we need to be house checked and things, so may take a while that way as well. problem is I can't wait for things (probably why i'm on IVA forum) I'm an impatient Leo!!

I'd say that sounds like a plan then Ang, 3 weeks off to settle in your new addition and the final week I would go out more, leaving them alone to test the water for when you're back at work.

My dogs are outside all day everyday, they have an 8x6 shed to themselves, dog flap, vet bed on the floor, they go out when I go to work 8.30/9am 'ish' and are fed outside, they stay outside together all day and come back in after their evening meal at 6pm and join in with us. We're often outside in the garden with em especially during th esummer etc., but they love their space. Full run of the garden but it is very secure. Nobody can get in or out! I can't even open back gate I have to use front door!
