I tried to rent when I was about 2 years in to an iva and couldn't get anywhere. I'm now renting privately ... friend of a friend. It was the only way I could do it. Luckily she had a history of debt problems so was very sympathetic. Otherwise I'd be in a box under a bridge!

Some people have managed to rent - it's usually best to do it through a private landlord.

Hi. I managed to rent having recently started my IVA. It took a while and was initially difficult finding an agency that would help but we managed in the end! We had to use my Mom as a guarantor and had to pay an extra £95 for some insurance. We were completely honest with the agent from the start which helped [:)]

No-one can really answer this correctly, as the decision depends upon the attitude of landlords and letting agents. But I have lots of clients who have managed to secure rented property both whilst and when they were about to enter IVAs. Honesty in the application process is usually the best policy.

Hi,
Just to say that I've never had any problems renting privately using an agency and as Melanie says, honesty is the best policy! The only issue I had was that in some cases I had to pay a little more than one months rent as a deposit.

Just to add that two members of staff (from different estate agents) were also in IVAs so were very understanding! :)

Given the dysfunctional state of the banking system and economy more generally then IVAs and of the like are becoming evermore commonplace.
