The problem is that banks to do not make any money out of basic current accounts - and we should not really blame them for that as they are profit making enterprises at the end of the day.

You'd have thought they would have been making enough on charges, and on the premium accounts to be able to fund the basic accounts!

Whilst they may not make money directly from basic accounts, their lending should be based upon their deposits (I know this ratio went out the window in recent years hence the near collapse of the banking system). Hence any deposits increases their ability to lend which is their major source of income.
