Are you in the directory? It could be that it is a stab in the dark and they are just phoning numbers at random.

No I am ex directory and have also gone down the line a few years ago of having my details removed from call centre lists.
Having read my last post I can see I am also having problems spelling today [8D]
I was a taken back a bit as I have not received any cold calls from companies for over two years, as I await to enter into an iva (hopefully)a phone call (automated) telling me I could wipe 100% of my debt off.

I'm surprised then, we are ex directory and have never received any cold calls at all. If we did, BT would be getting a very stroppy phone call from me!

Never noticed the spelling to be honest.

You could think about changing your number.

Bankruptcy proceedings, which is what they are trying to tell you is available, has been around since the Romans were in Britain. So definately nothing major changing from 1 April 2010 - apart from the costs which are going up from £510 to £600.

These companies make their money out of persuading vulnerable people that they have been badly advised in entering into an IVA. How patronising is that, when it was an individual choice to go down that route and no-one coerced anyone into signing on the dotted line. They will then charge you around £1,500 for assistance in filling in a few forms that are no more difficult than applying for any social benefit, or renewing your tax credits, and promise to hold your hand at the Court hearing - which is generally a rubber stamp by the bankruptcy clerk in his/her own office!

You don't need the services of these firms, and if you do need assistance with bankruptcy most insolvency practitioners will deliver this on a completely free of charge basis. If you need to do this on a paid basis due to complexities, there are a couple of reputable companies that do this work properly.

If only the register weren't so freely available. These companies would go out of business if they couldn't look it.

A friend in work was approached by the so called IVA council claiming she had been missold her IVA. She went through bankruptcy with them and is delighted with the service. She only had to make payments for one year then was discharged which surprises me on the salaries we are on which is quite high. I haven't said anything to her about them mostly being scam merchants because she seems so happy with her outcome and she has already done it so too late now to say anything without causing her anger unnecessarily. I am glad she personally thought the process was painless but not everyone seems to have the same experience with these companies.

I'd be interested to know how she managed to only make payments for 12 months. If diposable income is over £99 per month then you will have an IPA for 3 years. She would have been discharged after 12 months anyway, regardless of whether or not she was assisted.

I wonder if the payments she made were to this company? Their fees are quite high.

I wouldn't touch any of them with a ten foot barge pole personally.
