My contract is up in a month, and I was looking at the new phone options. It looks like O2 have changed things and line rentals have been reduced, but you have to buy the phone interest free over the duration of your contract. This involves a credit check apparently. Has anyone been able to upgrade ok since this has been the case? Obviously you used to pay for the phone in the monthly contract price before, but I don't think there was a credit check.

If you are a current pay monthly customer you should be fine.

Paul

To be honest I've been upgrading for years with bad credit, so hopefully should be ok. I'm a bit sceptical though!

Hi,

We have contract phones and has in the last 2 months upgraded 2 of them...not in price just the handset! There wasnt any issues at all. Even with the car insurance they say they do a credit check and we have passed that with 2 different companies now since being in an iva. I think all they look at is your payment history with them and as long as that is ok you should be fine..

UCG,

I am with O2 as well. You should be OK so long as you stick with them.

I encountered problems though when I wanted to swap provider - no chance on contract.
My opinions are just that: Based on my experience and being a self-employed IVA customer.

Thanks - UpToMyNeckInIt, I realised I wouldn't be able to change so will be sticking with O2. Just scared me when I saw they do a credit check!

No credit checks required for new contracts i upgraded mine last yaer, no problems, it cost me afew quid extra to get a good phone but all is ok , just play safe as o2 are stitching people up on long term deals charging extra just tell them your moving to someone else they will reduce and give you cash back it all helps.....

nffc - was this in the new system where you have to buy the phone over an interest free term though? If you go to the upgrade page and try to get a new phone without paying for it outright it does say a credit check is done.

We've just upgraded my daughters for her for xmas and I was concerned as it came up with a credit agreement but was accepted fine, I think it just comes up with that because the cost of these phones now is so high if you bought them outright, not that we are in a position to do that however

If you upgrade to a Refresh tariff it is actually a credit agreement. On the My O2 app I have a section for airtime and a separate section for the phone plan which has the following information:

Phone Plan - o2-**********-***
Total Credit - £480.00
Duration of Plan - 24 months
APR* - 0.00%

It's also worth bearing in mind that you cannot sell a phone on the Refresh plan until the full cost is paid off.

I also meant to add that it shows the repayments paid to date and the settlement amount in the same way as a loan. I'm not sure if this makes any difference to upgrading but I thought I'd point it out.

Thanks Skippy - did you take out your Refresh contract when in an IVA?

No, I was with Vodafone during my IVA and BR and upgraded using their standard tariffs without any problems. My credit file is now clear, hence changing to O2.

OK I really don't think I'll be able to upgrade on O2 Refresh as it's a credit agreement for the phone. Oh well.
