You can go to the Abbey and open a basic no frills, no overdraft, no chequebook account, as long as you have a driving licence and a passport.

Hi Booboo

Any bank that has a basic account with no attached credit facilities ie: overdrafts, cards etc and is not one of your creditors

As to documents, that depends on the bank in question.

Hi Dominic,
The Abbey sounds just like what i want, the only thing is I don't drive. Would maybe a letter or p60 do with my passport?
thanks for that too Kezza, i appreciate any advice

I used Natwest because they use Solo and it is accepted anywhere whereas Visa Electron was not. Also, if you go under £10 they will not close your account. It's a basic account with NO credit features not even a cheque book. I opened it over the telephone. I had to take identification into my local branch. A driver's licence, utility bill and a passport was all that was required. This was last year and I may be incorrect about the ID I used ( bad memory) but it was a smooth process

The rule of thumb with opening a new bank account is go into the branch in person. Be up front. Explain that you believe that your credit rating is poor and that you want a simple account with no credit facilities which your wages can be paid into.

You will need a proof of ID and a proof of address. The proof of ID will normally need to be a passport, driving license or birth certificate. The proof of address can be any utility bill (note, a mobile phone bill will not be accepted).

Generally good banks to try are: Abbey, Halifax, NatWest, Woolwich, Barclays

I hope this helps

Hi

I opened a new account at the Nationwide on Wednesday all I needed was a passport and utility bill.
The account was opened there and then I didn`t even have to put any money in there and then.
It is a basic account which offers Direct Debit and Standing Order facility with a bank Card for withdrawls only no debit facility.
I told them I was in an IVA and this did not matter.

Many of our clients have also had good experiences with Nationwide. I believe the account in question is called the Flex Cash Account.

ok Booboo get your salary payment switched to that account if your current bank is one of your creditors becasue if you get an iva in place they will probaley freeze your account and grab any money in it.
