Hi langerbridge - thank u!

No, bit like finding a needle in a haystack in the area we live, places like carcraft websites only let you search from 3,500 in price.
Dont want to go to far to just look, Ive got 6 weeks to find something b4 the rust buckets MOT ends.
Still ideally want a ford focus early 2000 or something similar in the ford range.
Final IVA payment made in April 2013, never ever thought we could do it or get through it but we did! X

Don't use that car supermarket or any of the others. Invest in a copy of Parkers or glasses guide less than a fiver from famous magazine/book retailer with 1st two initials wh. That way you know how much the car should be!! You need to look at small garages. You have said you have faith in two garages in a previous post so why not ask them to look out for a car? Just looking in my local rag there are loads of cars for £1000. Good luck with the new car hunting!!

Is proving such a headache already!!!
Local paper has about 20 cars in it & tonight was car sales night! This is excluding the used car sales garages in our area & most start from 3,000.
The garages we use & went to do not sell cars, quite common where we live. The main one we use for MOT/servicing was recommended by a friend whom used to own it & we have used it years, but dont sell!!!!
Personally I dont want to go to carcraft or such places, IM not just going to jump on something & say we will have that.
One thing good about being in a IVA is I am going to be asking lots of questions & consider my purchase before buying it!!!!

Sorry meant the garages you know can keep an eye out for you. They speak to lots of people & can find all sorts. I know a few people who have bought card like this. I sold mine like this! A mechanic will have a look at a car for you if you have built up a relationship with you.

Just been reading your thread Mrs Knight....glad you getting things sorted!

My advice would be to check your local Gumtree site. I wouldn't even consider a car supermarket of any type but then again I know people that work in a couple lol. Check all your free ads and buy private. Sellers will ask for MORE than they expect to get for a car so theres always room to haggle.

Both my car and my wifes are now over 10 year old and I suppose I have the benefit of being able to do a lot of my own DIY on cars. Recently a friend of mine (also in IVA) got quoted £900 to get his 04 Reg car (so its not just old cars that cost) through its MOT....I done more jobs on the car than the MOT required and in total it cost him under £250 including getting it retested!

Your right to buy a Focus or any ford for that matter...some say they are unreliable but theres so many cheap parts available and when your looking at older cars you will probably find that many parts have already been replaced.

I have a Y reg Mondeo and wife has a Y reg Focus and yes they may not take me to the moon and back but they are all bought and paid for, comfortable and do the job they are supposed to and in reality they're value is well below £1k.

By the way I live in the North East (circa Newcastle) and our local Gumtree site is always full of cheap and decent motors, well under £1k.

Good luck!

Good advice there Pennyless. Pre-IVA I was in the habit of driving large (but older) luxury cars ( or barges!)but have sacrificed the comfort and ---yes OK -- image, for a smaller (still comfortable-ish) car, much cheaper to run and a lot less to go wrong. I am gradually getting used to it :-)
My opinions are merely that .. opinions based on experience. Always seek professional advice.

Some people at my works take great pleasure in pointing out that my cars are getting on in age and I should look at a new car (little do they know about an IVA) but to tell the truth I maintain them religiously and keep them looking spotless, after all they still have to last another 3 years minimum (prayers). Always found if you look after a car it'll look after you.

I always take great pleasure in replying that my cars are "bought & paid for" and still get me from A to B....after all its ok having an expensive car but if their not 3 years or younger, they still cost as much to maintain.

I buy all my parts off ebay or cheap motor factors and where-as a friend of mine paid £350 to have his brakes replaced I can replace all mine for well under £100......mind you I pay the extra in cuts, bruises and lost skin....but they'll heal faster than my bank balance:)

You're lucky in that you can do your own repairs Pennyless - the vast majority of us have to use a garage. My husband used to do his own repairs but with modern engines these days it's not easy and he wouldn't touch them anymore.

Plus we live on a hill so no level surface on which to do said repairs!

Kallis I only learned out of neccessity not choice (over last couple of years) and believe me when your lying under a car after 10hrs at 1am in the morning with your wife working from the top and you below the car, both up to the eyes in grease and oil, it really makes you wish you could afford a garage lol.

Really frustrating how much garages charge and to tell the truth theres no longer any mechanics these days...their more like fitters....if a parts broken they would rather replace than repair.

Our local schools normally run "car maintainance" class over the summer to show people how to do the basics and they're also subsidised for those of us in our predicement.

Thank you for that pennyless, I shall have a look at gum tree! I'm also in the north east on the coast.

We really have our hearts set on finding a ford focus, it's in the same car tax & insurance group we have now. As I was just saying to hubby this morning, we have to consider everything.

Getting a bit frustrated as we won't have our half of the money till payday & we have 6 weeks left on this cars, MOT.
But it's quite exciting too!

Hope you get a car sorted Lyns.

My hubby will do brakes, suspension and anything that doesn't involve going under the bonnet on modern cars. You haven't a clue what is what now! He used to do the lot on all of our cars years ago. He wouldn't service our Skoda and that is over 5 years old.

We do have a good local garage though that don't rip you off and for MOT we take it to somewhere that only does an MOT so you know they're not going to tell you something needs fixing when it doesn't.

Daughter has an Astra, she was told by the garage she bought it from, when she took it back for a service, that she needed tyres, and a drive shaft boot was leaking.

It's just sailed through it's first MOT without any work needing doing at all and not even an advisory!

I wish you were closer Lyns - my mum has been told she's got to stop driving and I've got to get rid of her car. It's older than yours, but she's had it serviced every year, it's been kept in a garage and it's got 8 months MOT!

I agree with your hubby about modern cars Jan - I can remember looking under the bonnet of my old Golf and being able to see where everything was. Look under the bonnet of mine and you can hardly see anything!
