Well we have just returned from the vets after taking our old dog to the vets.

She had huge problems with her one leg this morning, her back end was weak anyway, so she couldn't do much anyway. She was also in pain.

We made an appointment, and I think we both knew what the outcome was going to be. The vet said she had no feeling in her one front leg, and not a lot in the rear, and she was nearly falling over, so we made the decision to put her out of her misery.

Both of us have been in bits although we knew we had done the right thing.

She was about 14 so had lived a good life.

Our poor young dog doesn't know what has happened and keeps looking for her. We will be getting him a new companion soon.

I am so sorry, you poor things. They are so much a part of our family and when we have them we dont always realise that they are going to leave us one day. We also have no idea how on earth to get through it all when they are gone.

I feel that you did the right thing, Bella was loved and treasued but deserved the best and thats what she had from you today. God bless you.

In my thoughts.

Thanks both, it is hard. It had been coming for a while, she was old, but always seemed to rally when we thought she was on her last legs, but it was not to be today.

Ang, I sincerely hope the vet can do something. It really is an awful feeling, even though you know it's for the best. Doesn't make it any easier. I shall have everything crossed.

I am glad we have our small dog Lloyd, he is making it easier to bear.

I know, its the worst thing, so upsetting and non animal lovers will never understand how much grief youre both feeling.

You deserve a damn good cry, I am going to send you a hug, a tissue and I just hope it all starts to ease soon. She is at peace and in no more pain and you had to do that for her.

So very sorry.

oh kallis i am so sorry for your loss.it truly is heartbreaking to lose a pet, especially when they have been part of the family for so long.our little westie,Barney was 15 when we had to have him put down and it was just unbearable.i still miss him after all these yrs.nothing can compensate for your loss but it is a relief to know that they are no longer in any pain or discomfort.i really do sympathise with you.rest in peace, your little pal.x

Ladyh, that was so lovely.

We both keep crying and our poor little dog still keeps looking for her. He doesn't understand what has happened.

It is awful when they go, and it takes a while to get over it. Little did I know when I posted about Charlie's going, that I would soon be starting my own thread. Can't believe that this time last night she was absolutely fine.

Perhaps they have met up in pet heaven and are romping around together.

Many thanks to everyone for their kind words and sympathy.

Am so sorry to hear your sad news Jan - even though you know you have done the right thing it is still such an awful experience saying a final goodbye to an much loved old friend.

My dog is also 14 and I simply dread the day when I am in your position, but having your younger dog must be a great comfort. Thinking of you both and keep strong.
