I know, because about 18 months ago, I was setting off at a roundabout, there were no cars on it or coming from the right and the car in front of me, (had 2 young Asian lads in it) just stopped dead on the roundabout and I hit the back of it. I was only doing about 5mph but they claimed for whiplash and said I had written their car off for £12,000! The damage to my car cost £26 to fix. What a joke, I had an accident investigater come to my house and my insurance company said they know of these 2 men and they are a known scam team and they think the accident was staged. I was asked to be a witness in court but I have heard nothing since, I rang my insurance company as I have lost my No Claims Bonus and they said the other party has 3 years in which to bring a claim! I am furious as I cannot afford insurance now, my Dad bought me some as a present for this year, but I don't know what I will do when it runs out.

I was also lucky that I had my no claims bonus protected so I didn't lose it, although my insurance company at the time (Tesco, I would rather walk than insure my car with them again!) were useless. I took them ages to assess the car as they said they couldn't find it, even though it was parked outside my house - it went downhill from thereon in. I lost count of the time they lost my file...

On a serious note, I read recently that there are gangs who are pulling the same scam as Jane talks out about, so the police and insurers are saying take as many pictures of your car and the other vehicle at the scene of accident as possible.
