I have a friend who can't have children and she gets furious about the benefit system, sadly where we work for example you're working and earning a wage that doesn't entitle you to any income based benefit. ECDL £600:00, with an income based benefit and this could be Working Tax Credit or Housing Benefit only £60:00..............very unfair in my opinion. I'm lucky as all courses no matter what they are are free for me as an employee.

There are also schemes run via external funding that with an income based benefit these courses are free dependant on a few more criteria. They enrol, they come for two weeks and withdraw, affects our achievement and retention. You pay £600 and I can guarantee you finish as you've paid!

I hope no one thinks I'm having a go at anyone on here! I don't blame anyone for claiming what they are entitled to, I'm just saying that if you work and don't have children for whatever reason you aren't entitled to anything, no matter what happens.

When I had a pay cut last year and it looked as though I might lose my job we looked into whether we could get any help if necessary, but nothing.

I'm not either Skippy, I think some benefits payable are very just and needed to gain a satisfactory level of living. I don't think any of us will ever condone having children to benefit from the benefit system. I was purely showing what a difference in course fees there is for those on benefit and those not. x

I agree with you completely about course fees Lesley. I want to do an OU course, but I can't afford to, and I'm not entitled to any help - what incentive is there to try to better yourself?

Perhaps those people who enrol and don't complete the course should be made to pay something towards the course as they are taking a place from someone who might really want it.
