I have never had a problem with the girls growing up (apart from the stuff I go a bit red over) it's the blinking boyfriends...

Mind you the two eldest now have lovely fellas and have been in fairly long term relationships, my eldest daughters fiancée is in the Navy (helicopters) and is off to Iraq on Monday for 18 months, so she has moved back in home as she doesn’t want to be on her own for all that time.

I'm an only daughter and my dad was really protective of me. He wasn't keen on Dave and they didn't talk for a long time, but the Christmas Day before my dad died him and Dave had a long conversation like old friends - I'm so glad they did as it meant I knew my dad liked him and would be happy for me.

Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is the present - a gift to make the most of.

ahhh...i dont blame her. It will be tough for her and she'll need her family more than ever. Rob was a soilder for 6 years, luckily before i met him, i would have hated it.

Rob and the boyfriend word dont go well together at all...but we have a few years yet to worry about that...at the minuite boys are smelly as far as my girls go.

LOL - You are living the best times, boyfriend was a word I had to learn to understand. One thing I did learn during their teenage years was that if I didn't like a boyfriend I would just make out they were the greatest thing since sliced bread – then the teenage rebellion thing would kick in, and they would get rid of them…

Hi Just wanted to say, that reading these comments has bought a tear to my eye.

Firstky reading bagpuss's as I can share that sickly feeling as I to have 3 daughters (10,8&4) one of which offered to pay for her own birthday party (as we could'nt afford to do one for her), she had £3.27 - bless her.

Then when I read the other messages it made me feel really warm and happy again as a real sence of togetherness came across from all the comments.

We had a large family growing up and money was tight we had one holiday to Skegness in the whole of our childhood, which I remember well. We had a great time. I felt that i had to shower my children with the things we didn't get as children, it really wasn't necessary. Like some of you have said it's the fun things they like more and will remember for years to come.

We went out for a walk the other day, myself and my 4 children and the dog! we picked conkers, rolled down hills, mucked about in puddles and kicked are way through a thousand leaves. By the time we got home we were covered in mud and wet through but all of my children said thanks, that was really touching and it didn't cost a penny.

At christmas we wrap a large box up with cheapy old wrapping paper and inside we have party hats, party poppers and all kinds of bits and bobs, mainly from the £1 shop. The kids rip it apart and spend christmas morning running around the house blowing whistles, streamers everywhere, balloons etc they have great fun. We usually put our dodgy christmas DVD on and have chocolate out of our christamas stockings for breakfast.

I think your daughter is very special and a real credit (if there wasn't a better word??) to you.

Have a lovely birthday and hope you have lots of fun!!!

All your stories are lovely. I too only had one holiday growing up and to be honest i cant rememer it that well i think maybe i was a bit young. We didnt have a lot but we loved what we did have.
I remember christmas. My brother would stay awake christmas eve and wait till he heard mum going to bed. He then came and woke the other 3 of us and we all would sneak downstairs and open our presants. By the time mum got up, most of us were crashed out sleeping in the front room.
Mum for the most of our childhood brought us up on her own so money was tight but she did her best and always got us the best she could.

Angie, of course you haven't messed up. Please don't feel bad - the children probably just picked up on stuff. They bounce back, and it sounds like you gave her a terrific birthday. And you are there for your children - that's what they will always remember, not the latest gifts, but the love you give. Try not to worry. D.

I have read this thread and it has touched my heart. I wish your daughter a very happy belated birthday - sounds as if you have a real diamond in your home.

Christmas was always a special time in our home - family all around and loads of pressies to open, dashing outside to play with the new toys, bombing around on the beach after lunch and coming home to collapse in a heap of pure delighted exhaustion. My folks didn't have much, struggled with everything, fought continuously about money etc etc and I made a vow to myself - to give whatever I could and never bicker about money. Becuase their arguments saddened me.

Now I am bankrupt and for the first Christmas in 3, I am not going to spend it alone - I am going to spend it with my partners family and we have both spent the last weekends looking at all the bargain stores for small gifts and I could not believe the amount of fun we had doing it!!! Small, cheap gifts that made us smile and laugh at, thinking "can you imagine so-and-so's face when they see this?!"

I cannot wait for Christmas - just to spend it around people who love me and care for me - I don't care much for the gifts, its the love that gets spread around that I want.

To the Mums and Dads out there - a bit of advice..............

Buy two German Shepherds and teach them to attack on the smell of aftershave!!!!!

Angie its probably one of the better moves you will ever make....the B word we call it in our house LOL...just think of the years ahead where now you can give them, holidays, nights out when they are older, driving lessons in the future, the list is endless i couldnt of done this if i had continued anymore, and doing it whilst they are young gives them better times at home im not worried about bills at all any more, they have all gone. Also one of the main reasons i went BR was so that the children never had to pay for my mistakes, through struggling throughout their childhood always being at work all the hours god sends. You done great, and enjoy the extra time with the kids that makes up for many pressies you see....

B word not as bad as you`d think ? (im gonna find out soon)Since found out and turned out great!!!
