It never rains with vets bills, it pours! Cleo my cat got rushed to the emergency vet this afternoon. I didn’t realize, but my quiet, unassuming girl had an abscess in her mouth. It must have been agony for her. This afternoon, I was in the study when I heard a scream of pain from one of the cats. I rushed to see what was happening, and saw my baby girl foaming at the mouth having what I thought was a fit. She was pawing and clawing at her face. I have never been so scared!

I rushed her to the vet (it would have to be out of hours and the ER vet!) and it turns out that she had an abscess that had burst in her mouth with very severe gingivitis and ulcers. Thing is, she has no tarter on her teeth, and doesn’t need a dental. The vet gave her some morphine for the pain along with antibiotics and an anti-inflamatory, and she has to go back tomorrow evening (Sunday) for a second antibiotic shot.

I feel so guilty I didn’t notice sooner.

It’s been one thing after another with this lot in the last few weeks. First it was Barney my ferret, who has a cancerous lump in his abdomen and is on paliative care until I have to call the grim reaper. Then it was Cara my dog being hospitalized, and now it’s Cleo.

Fortunately, my dad has been kind enough to pay for Cleos vets bills for me until I can pay him back, but we have a battery of viral tests she has to undergo next week to rule out various immune diseases and I'm worried about that. :o(

And to cap it all off, a so-called friend told me that I needed to get rid of my animals because they cost too much. She told me I should have Cleo put to sleep, because she was only a cat, and I had 4 others! Some people have NO idea!

Sorry, just had to get the rant off my chest.

Are you sure that you are not inventing all of these illnessess just to get to see Cardiff's own James Herriott again??

Just joking, and hope she will be well soon.

Oh Robbiecat, what a couple of weeks???? Don't feel guilty, animals have a knack of hiding pain and discomfort so you weren't to know. At least she's getting sorted now, pity about the vets fees though. I'm waiting for my youngest cat to have her kittens, she got out before I could get her spayed and I didn't have the heart to have the kittens aborted. I'm just hoping that everything goes ok and I don't have to take her to the vets. Some people do not realise how we feel about animals, they do become part of your family and it is heart wrenching when something happens to them, your friend doesn't know what she's missing by seeing them as 'only cats'......
It's nice to be back......

Oh Robbiecat what a few weeks you have had[:(]
Animals can be such a worry sometimes, if only they could talk and tell us when they have something wrong!
Be positive & look after yourself, there are more important things in life than debts....

Best Wishes

Emma x

LOL Melanie! Cara's vet wasn't on duty - this was the out of hours Emergency vet. However, I was concerned when he recognised me, asked how I was and asked after 2 of my other cats that he's treated late at night in the past! Cleo is back to her regular vet Michael next week, so I'll have to wait a while to see Mr Cutie!

Chris, where are you located? It might be worth talking to either the RSPCA or Cats Protection to see if you qualify for a neutering voucher once your cat has had her kittens. In Cardiff I know that both organisations are starting a joint spay/neuter campaign so that anyone, not just those on benefits, can get their pets neutered, microchipped and vaccinated for free.

Hi,
Not sure if you're aware but people in certain circumstances (housing or council tax benefit) can be entitled to free treatment on the PDSA. Not all surgeries honour this but it's definately worth looking into.
The surgery I work at (or used to before they refused my flexi hours after having a baby due to the fact I can no longer do on call) runs the PDSA scheme and it's great for elderly people or those with a limited income.

I think the RSPCA help out with payment for Spay/neutering.
Take no notice from anyone who says Cloe is just a cat.
In my experience people who don't love animals are usually cold and heartless.
I hope Cloe is soon better.
