It was the first I had heard about it. I'm not likely to want or need credit once I've finished.

Jan, was also told that an IVA automatically drops off after six years from date of meeting. CCJs six years after entry and defaults six years after entry. Is that your understanding please? If that is correct surely it would be best to leave the credit files alone and wait until they drop off.

They should all drop off after 6 years David.

You may find sometimes though that creditors will default your account after your IVA has started. You need to write to them once it has finished and ask them to remove the default as they should not put it on.

I know one of my creditors have defaulted me well after the IVA was approved.

I've seen the file on http://www.annualcreditreport.co.uk/ If it is still there 6 years after the date my IVA was approved I will certainly be using those set of letters above as I know I've not had a letter from my creditors to say they were doing that.

In fact I will do that just as soon as I get the completion certificate as the process can take several months!

But would you like to change your mobile phone and go with another service provider, change your internet provider, get a credit gas or electricity meter installed, looking to move house rent someplace else.

A clean credit file is so important even when you don't want any further credit as such

I agree this is what should happen, however some creditors have been known to put defaults on your file after the IVA was approved, one was added 12 months after the approval date on mine.

Therefore it will be 7 years from the date of my IVA before that gets removed UNLESS I DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.

You write to them and tell them to remove it.

They cannot add defaults after the date of IVA approval, so once your IVA is completed, they have to remove it.

I will probably have a credit card again, and car finance, but I will be in control of things, because I have learnt my lesson the hard way. Its impossible to say you will never need credit again and I can understand if some people choose to never sign a credit agreement ever again.

I would never say that I would never have credit again. I know that I will need a new car in the future, and I definitely want to change my mobile phone.

I used to have 8 credit cards in my wallet with a combined credit limit of about £70k,those days are long gone. Just the one(perhaps even settle for a prepay card rather than a credit card, when they stop ripping folk off,and charging you to put money in and take money out).
