I am currently nearly 30 months into an IVA. My payments into the IVA have always been about £230 a month.
I want to adopt a child or maybe a pair of children with my Partner who is not connected with my IVA.
Will the IVA itself have a negative affect on my application to adopt a child . I am concerned that a social worker who may not be aware of what an IVA is would be concerned that an IVA could affect our chances of adopting a child.
I would be very grateful for any advice on this matter. Many thanks Paul[:)]
I see no reason this should be an issue but perhaps you should ring the local social services on a no names basis and ask them. If you do proceed you should be up front at all times because if they found out you were hiding something it would be much worse than the IVA.
Hi and welcome to the forum. I can imagine that the adoption process is lengthy? (only my guess). I wonder if you'd be out of your IVA by the time any adoption took place. In the interim you would be proving your ability to get your finances back on track. x
IVA final payment left the bank on the 26th January 2013...looking forward to a debt free future.
It would be a sad state of affairs if your IVA counted against you. IVA's should be viewed as a positive action to take control of your finances and is far more sensible than struggling on and risking further debt and ultimately bankruptcy.
It may be worthwhile asking your IP to send you a letter outlining the benefits of the IVA. Then you will have somethingto show the adoption company.
Please let us know how you get on. I for one wish you good luck!
We looked into adoption whilst in our IVA and although it would be marked down it would have no affect on the decision by the authorities that be - they were more interested in making sure your home and home life, family life with realtives would provide a safe family environment for the child placed with you.
Let us know how you get on.

There is a solution for everyone .... Just need to stay positive !
The adoption services are a law unto themselves. My brother and his wife were turned away because of the 12 year age gap between them! Both hard working nurses who would have loved kids but due to some draconian rules didn't get the chance!
I really hope the iva doesn't stop you!
Paul
Discharged today the 8th feb 2012. View is much brighter now.
Continuing to rebuild our credit worthiness.
You are likely score poorly in the area of financial management, but this is not the be all and end all of the process. There are far more imporatant benefits to adoption, such as offering a loving home to a needy child, the ability to spend time with them in their self-development and education, and warmth, love and affection. All of these areas are far more important than having a few debts - where there are probably good reasons for your difficulties and which are after all very under control within the IVA.
I also wish you the very best of luck with your application.
