any ideas for me? I am currently with Yorkshire bank. my creditors include barclaycard, Co-op and Natwest. if Yorkshire were to close my account any ideas who may help with basic account whilst in IVA.
The road is 72months long starting September 2010.

Hi
Try the Lloyds basic account or Santander.
If Yorkshire are a creditor then you will need to set up a new account before any IVA or DMP

Hi Andy

With Santander buying the Scottish Arm of Natwest as well as the British and Welsh arm of the RBS then wouldnt the right of offset apply?

Also, i heard somewhere that the Coop might be doing the same thing as Santander have done with RBS but buying some LloydsTSB Branches not sure if there is anything in that

If Yorkshire aren't a creditor then you should be ok to stay with them.

YBS Dont allow people who are in an IVA or Bankrupt Direct Debit and Standing Order Facilities, that was the case when I was in an IVA in 2007, I would ring them and check.

Coventry BS Do An Account called callsave Money Manager 1 which is an ATM Card Account allows Direct Debits Standing orders but to pay in you need to do this at a branch - for cash anyway.

There is also the Norwich and Peterborough BS Basic Account which comes with Debit card and cheque book you need to apply by phone instead of online and they used to allow payments into the account for cash and cheques via a coop branch not sure if thats still the case.

I would check with Yorkshire bank first to see whether they will close or downgrade the account

best of luck

Co-op accepted us over the phone yesterday and Natwest have just phoned to say they can open a bank account for anyone with an IVA! Thank heavens for Co-op.

Hi, I opened a Co-op Cashminder basic account and they also let me open a savings account too. The only thing about the co-op is that you need to make the date of your outgoing dds at least 1 day after your wages go in. The online banking is simple and easy to use.
Good luck getting it sorted.
1st call 3rd Nov 2010.
Creditors meeting 21st Feb 2011.
IVA approved 22nd Feb 2011.
Will all be over 21st Feb 2016.

Thanks Foggy. No Natwest said they couldn't open any bank account without a discharge certificate! Obviously with the IVA you don't get that for 5 or 6 years!!

ah right -- Roly -- typo on your post :-) Just wondered because Natwest gave me a full account (almost --- cheque book, atm card, no O/D and no g'tee card) just before my IVA --- wondering if they will catch on and close it!

Natwest are usually pretty good with those in an IVA.

Foggy - only HSBC and First Direct are known to close accounts so you should be ok.

Suprised that the Natwest have said that.

Nearly a year ago when I had to change banks I went to open the basic Step account, I was asked at the time if I had any 'adverse history' with any other banks etc, so I was honest and said I was entering into an IVA and I was told that it wasnt a problem.

Unless things have changed now???

From readng around it appears that alot depends on the person you are speaking to at the bank. I hav been told that Natwest are IVA friendly, but anti BR. I gather that some people in our expertly staffed financial institutions do not know the difference between IVA & BR !
