I went onto Confused.com yesterday and took out home contents insurance with Esure also included free legal protection and emergency cover for the 1st year. Option to pay monthly and cover was with immediate effect. Very reasonable cost and no stupid questions!

Thanks all...I'm about to go in search for some quotes now. Forgot to mention in my original post they also asked what was the value of my IVA....?? What has that got to do with anything!

Reading this set alarm bells ringing, so I checked my policy (Directline) - no mention of IVA, Bankruptcy etc (although there is a catch all clause about notifying them of any material change). Similarly, last year's renewal documents didn't mention IVAs.

Should we be alerting our insurers to the fact we have an IVA - is it a 'material change'?

I am loathed to ring them on a Saturday evening to ask in case they tell me they are cancelling the policy!

Result! Did online search via comparethemarket and there was a question in there about BR but not IVA and I am now insured with MORETHAN and the excess is only £50 and was still cheaper than some with some extra enhanced cover too. So thanks to all who replied :) will certainly be avoiding Admiral when it comes to car insurance which will be a much higher premium than my contents insurance...their loss!

There was a previous thread on here some months ago about material changes. I think quite a few of us then contacted insurers about IVA's etc.

It may not affect many policies but in my opinion, better to tell them than not, make a claim and find they can wriggle out of paying out.

When we told hubby's car insurance co they said thanks for telling us about the material change but it does not change the premium.

"Material change" means anything that might affect the policy --- they will not specify further as this will limit their ability to refuse payouts !!!
My opinions are merely that .. opinions based on experience. Always seek professional advice.

Yes but as Foggy says they won't define material change. So better to be safe than sorry I think? I believe it was the guy who posts on here about IVA payment cover that mentioned it previously (apologies - cannot remember his user name).

I know it's a bit of an old thread but just for information I am with Legal & General contents and buildings paying monthly taken out earlier in this year after being in IVA for about 4/5 months. When applying online I checked their small print in detail and also the website for any reference to IVA or creditor arrangments etc. I found not one reference to it. I also checked everything in detail when I got the insurance documents. Again no refernce to IVA or anything else. I was reading the other thread the other night and got a bit conerned so I checked with L&G whether or not an IVA had any affect on my insurance. It's does not. They do not consider it an issue.

Hi MikeyM, it doesn't matter how old the thread is as there is always someone on here looking for insurance. Good to know L&G are IVA friendly and Morethan who I am with. Maybe there should somewhere on the site that lists the IVA friendly and the not so friendly companies for all kinds of things all come up against whilst in an IVA. I think the banks freezing accounts with no warning is the worst one at the moment. It hasn't happened to me (touch wood) but read some horror stories on here. Glad you didn't hit any issues with L&G [:)]
