If they think you might be putting it on the market they are unlikely to charge you, but you probably won't get it in writing. It will, however, give you an idea as to how much your house would actually fetch, which will certainly help you decide on the best way forward.

They always seem so desperate for stock that I have never had an issue with getting a written quote from an estate agent for free.

They are also quite nosey and you must remember it is their job to know about houses in the area so they are always mad keen on seeing inside a property for comparisson purposes.
