Hi Peeps and Peepettes

I'm not a naturally gregarious person, in fact Victor Meldrew is quite warm by comparison, but I have enjoyed the various threads on this forum over the last few weeks. I am not knowledgeable about Finance but I do know a little about Computers, internet and software. I also know a bit about cats and their quirks, so if anyone wants to pick my brains please feel free. the reason I offer is everyone on here seems to help each other out and this is all I can offer to the heart of the group.[:)]

Hi Ray.I've proberbly not helped you at all but your IT knowledge too good to miss out on.The CD bit of my laptop is stuck /won't open.Any ideas? Cat

I have been offline for two days, this comp kept on switching itself off, with a brief message, runtime error, and blackness, sometimes it wouldnt turn back on. I put the recovery disk in, did a partial recovery, it took 14 hours and I still had the same problem. So I did the wipe clean recovery thingy today, took about 3 hours and it seems fine now. Took me about 5 hours to connect the the internet, but I did it. (the latter was due to the fact that I havent a clue). Now it seems OK. If I go offline again you will know it didnt stay fine. One person said it was the operating system (vista) another said it was hard drive fault.

I have 4 cats, know nothing really about cats but I love them, now. I was kind of an accidental cat owner.

This may be something as simple as power line becoming 'unstuck' and just needs reconnecting. If everything else is working OK then that would be my first thought. My second thought is there is a CD stuck in there. If this is the case near the CD drawer is a little hole. this is the drawer release bit. By inserting a paper clip in this hole the drawer should open . If this fails you need to find a handy IT man in your area (NOT DIXONS COMET OR CURRY'S)then pop it in to him for a diagnosis. If its still under warranty then take it back and have it repaired. By the way, I have nothing against the above shops ... they're just too darned expensive and do a lot of tooth sucking, especially if you're female.

Hi Lily.
This seems to be an inordinate length of time to reinstall your system even from scratch. It shouldn't take much over an hour. If you wish you could send me a system breakdown so that I know what you have, that way I can make an informed diagnosis and not a guess. Vista is supposed to be rock steady so a black screen is a little worrying but it may be something as simple as trying to run something which isn't compatible with Vista. Hard Drives in my experience rarely if ever cause 'runtime errors', so from what you have said the problem is more likely to be software related than hardware. If the system is working fine now then continue but if you get any hiccups, then let me know and we can have a deeper look at it ( no charge lol) [:)][:)]

I would never buy anything from Currys or take anything to them to be repaired after what they did to our television. It kept switching off so as we had an extended warranty we booked it in with Mastercare. When it came back it was dirty, the screen was chipped and it had a different plug - we don't think it was our TV. They collected it again and it came back with a new case, but the screen was still chipped so when Dave complained they agreed to write it off. We were given vouchers and went and bought a replacement TV from Currys - which didn't work properly! When we took it back the manager told us it was a feature of the set and when I complained very loudly that I wanted a TV that worked, the manager asked me what part of no didn't I understand, and threatened to have me arrested!

There is simply no excuse for that sort of treatment. If it had been me I would have contacted Trading Standards. As an ex employee of DSG Stores I KNOW the standard of training in the Dixon Group is abysmal, and very few of the managerial staff are conversant with Consumer Law. I hope you now have a set that works, I know I couldn't do without me Telly. Gotta have me film fix on a daily basis [:D]
